I was at the meet this afternoon, and here is my take on what transpired.
125 - Nice work by Sanders. Pataky is tough, but not near as good as Sanders from his feet.
133 - Little Thorn has really been turning up the heat and continued today, unfortunately Long looked to be a step or two ahead of everything Little Thorn had planned. Long didn't seem to gas either. Didn't look like little Thorn liked to be manhandled and may have snuck in a minor cheapshot (or two, lol)
141 - Mike Thorn is still a little sloppy on his feet. If he is gonna win a championship, he's got to perfect some go-to takedown that he can hit on anyone. Mike gets much stronger as the match goes on. Alton didn't have much of anything going in this match.
149 - Danny Z out wrestled Frank the Tank! It felt like Frank got the first takedown and then was trying to stall out the match. Danny Z has a terrific misdirection sweeping single that he caught Frank in twice. Great match by Danny Z. This should be a good confidence booster for him. Fans not happy at all with officiating at this point. Whole crowd booed Frank off the mat.
157 - Taylor made Mincy look like mince meat. Mincy got nothing going and might have been pinned near the end of the match. Taylor is SWEET. Gonna have a great career!
165 - Cody Yohn looked good, and totally out muscled his opponent. I am not sure, but Cody looked gassed the last period. His offense winded down to almost non-existence. Still good win, as Cody dominated.
174 - Glasser showed his heart big time tonight. Ruth is better than Glasser. Glasser showed some good fire in the first period and did a good job of fighting off Ruth's attacks. Ruth's speed and set ups are just too quick for Glasser to keep up with. Glasser fought hard to keep it close and came through with a huge escape at the end of the match to keep Ruth to a decision. I think there was 3 seconds left when he got the escape?
184 - Steiny, wow! absolutely took apart Q. Q could get nothing going at all, mainly because Steiny stayed after it all match. Steiny appears to be a top 3 184lber. Ref let Q lay on his belly way too long.
197 - Sonny makes a nice return and owns his opponent. Even though he was characteristically sloppy on his feet, he over powered his opponent and had little trouble doing what ever he wanted......until he took him down and threw in the legs, then he couldn't turn the guy to save his own life. Ref let another Penn St guy lay on his belly way too long.
285 - Pavilion was rocking when Nelson came out to start the match. Nelson got after Wade right away and got a quick single, but failed to finish. Wade was obviously looking to initiate some upper body action, but Nelson fended those off looking for something else.....that never came to fruition. 2nd period Wade started down but was out in less then 10 seconds. Back to the dance on their feet. 3rd period Nelson chose down.....and WAS RODE OUT!!! Disappointing to see the #8 wrestler unable to score a SINGLE point at home against a lower ranked guy. JRob appeared to be pretty unhappy with the outcome. Fans were definitely unhappy as evidenced by their booing to end the match.
Nice job overall by the Gophers, very impressed with Danny Z and Steinhaus. Its good to have Sonny back too. Penn St fans should be a little upset I think that Ruth didn't get the major. He seems ultra talented but also loses focus a lot.
Watch the replay on BTN ... pay close attention during the Taylor/Mincey match ... Mincey grabs the edge of the mat in the first period, I believe, as Taylor tries to haul him back in, easy to see from across the mat. Cael calls the lead ref (Tim Shiels of Apple Valley, MN) over to the table and asks him if he saw this happen and Shiels says "No, I didn't see it", then BTN shows a close-up from another angle as Mincey clearly grabs the mat with Shiels looking directly at it happening. The head Ref flat out lied to Cael.
A lot of talk about PSU not getting called for stalling (as the MN wrestlers rode parallel) ... but no mention of Taylor and Ruth literally sitting on their MN opponents waiting for any sign of movement ... Hmm? And yes, I agree, Ruth should have gotten one more TD in at the end of the first, which would have won PSU the match. Taylor's fall that wasn't called also would have won the match for PSU. But I especially like how quickly the ref called stalemate during the Alton/Thorn match when it favored Alton, but let them linger a bit in the Kemerer/Yohn match when it favored Yohn. No big deal ... I'm just sayin'.
Molinaro really did look gassed ... maybe he was sick ... I don't know ... but I do know he was very fortunate. And Wright just isn't (W)right.
Mincey obviously did grab the mat. But it looked to me (240 miles away) that the ref was watching Taylor and the inbound line rather than Mincey and the edge of the mat.
I thought the ref was consistent in calling stalemates on both sides, but he had no clue on calling stalling. When it became apparent that there was nothing wrong with Frank the Tank, I think he should have ordered the PSU staff off the mat and Frank back to the middle.
As for Taylor's pin, I've been a referee and no body has the view that the ref has, so I don't buy a missed pin.
I agree with you on Wright.....I was shocked. He was SO good 2 years ago.
