I just don't see how anyone can make the statement that at this moment in time Kellen Russell has done enough this year to establish himself as the clear favorite in the weight class. Stating he's the favorite doesn't mean that he's going to win it, or even that you SHOULD pick him.
Just means that out of everyone at the weight class this year he's performed the best and given that he's handed each member of the top 5 their only losses he really doesn't have any competition right now for the title

By the looks of it most on the board seem to agree this weight has no "clear favorite" as of today. We will have to see after this weekend where the opinions are as to who is the favorite maybe.
That being said, the ranking is clearly earned and as such, I think he is the clear favorite as well.

I think Russell should be ranked #1 at this point since he has beaten most in the top five and Marion has not had a chance to wrestle much this year. Had Marion been wrestling all year and was undefeated I think he would get the nod in the rankings because he is the returning finalist. Since Russell has not beat Marion yet I dont' think he can be called the clear favorite. He deserves his ranking however. Sunday should put this argument to rest.

1. Montell Marion-Iowa (Jr)
2. Kellen Russell-Michigan (Jr)
3. Mike Thorn-Minnesota (Sr)
4. Andrew Alton-Penn State (Fr)
5. Boris Novachkov-Cal Poly (Jr)
6. Jimmy Kennedy-Illinois (Sr)
7. Zack Bailey-Oklahoma (Sr)
This is how I see the weight class ending up. People want to short change Alton based on inexperience. But The Alton/Russel matches and Alton/Marion match were too close to count Alton out of either one. I think Alton can beat either Marion, Russel, or Thorn on any given day, but I don't think that happens this year.
I think that Marion's ability to beat Russell will be based on his lifestyle off of the mat as well as his skill on the mat. If he has truly gotten it together he can take it all.
Russell is the clear favorite right now. He's been phenomenal this year. Made Mike Thorn look silly(at end hahahah) Pinned Kennedy, beat Alton three times.. He's done all you could possibly ask at this point.
