I think if Thorn and Marion meet twice they will split. My preference is to win at conferences.
I haven't seen the TV replay so I don't know what you can hear on it but @ 133 Brands was yelling instructions the entire match, more then others. So much so the PSU fans were yelling @ him to sit down. He was encouraging Tony to keep slapping Long's head & face & I think that initially really bothered Long as no one had done something like that to him. Brands kept yelling "Do this Ramos" "Do that Ramos" I have to say I think it gets in the head of the opponent as much as it might be instructional for his guy.
@ 141 when the guys went off the Iowa side of the mat Brands was on the mat yelling "He can't keep up with you! He can't keep up with you!" Sometimes that is all it takes is a little acknowledgment & agreement. Everyone saw it was true. And you wondered if Andrew was gonna suck it up.
I also have to wonder that after putting Marion on his back & bringing the crowd to their feet that maybe Alton thought that he had won the match right there. Sometimes it is a real mental challenge to keep wrestling hard if you think you had already won & are stuck on that.
@ 149 I didn't realize that it was lil Ballweg he wrestled. That tmakes his win even more disappointing for the lack of bonus IMO.
@ 165 I think that Janssen looked pretty tough & I wouldn't be surprised if he actually AAed this year. He looks like he has the tools to take on just about anyone not named Howe of Burroughs @ that weight.
@ 174 I am actually more curious to hear from someone who has seen both Ed's wins over Lewnes & Henrich AND Reader's win over Lewnes. Where would you put the 2 now as on paper Ed's win looks more dominating.
@ 184 as a PSU fan you just have to be frustrated with Q's performance all year. I am starting to think that NOT going to Budapest was a mistake. He could have used that stiffer competition. Gambrall made QW look like he was over-matched & not the guy who hammered GG last summer.
All this being said PSU was 2 TDs away from winning this or @ least a ref's hand slap from tying it. The 1st thing the coaches can control. The 2nd no one can. Iowa had been there before & looked like it. Cael needs to take a page out of Gable's or Brands book & get those guys "Hawkeye tough" but in his own way.
Both teams are young so they will be seeing a lot of each other the next few years. We'll see if the PSU squad learns to get up from a punch in the mouth & more importantly punch back.
I am not a fan of "wrestler x beat wrestler y by xx amount so he should beat wrestler z by x amount". After seeing both matches, and although the scores in the two matches were much different I felt Lewnes was beaten just/nearly as soundly by Reader as he was by Ruth.Comparing Reader and Ruth, Reader looked to be more physical, balanced, and technically solid, while Ruth looked faster and slicker. Stylistically, Reader seems to have morphed a little bit into an Andrew Howe type and the bump up in weight seems to be a really good move for him.
As of now I would put Reader above Ruth but the gap between the two seems pretty close to me and I think it would be a pretty interesting match.
184- we will have to disagree as I think QW has a mental issue right now. I don't know how people don't see it that way but whatever. By reading Cael's quotes about that match I think he is telling QW he needs to get mentally tougher as well. KR out of all people says he doesn't think it is QW arm that is the problem which just solidifies my thought about QW. It isn't an attack on him personally just an opinion of that match I seen. Troy Nickerson had a shattered shoulder and kicked ass. He is what I call mentally tough. I remember standing up and clapping for him last year after he was finished wrestling in Omaha because that kid was a warrior.
This from a douchbag!
PSU trying to come to terms with Iowa loss - Sports | Centre Daily TimesQuote:
Sanderson pinned part of the loss — his seventh in two years at Penn State — on himself
“I really got outcoached in a couple of those key matches where they had a pretty good strategy,” Sanderson said. “They slowed our guys down and kind of let us wear ourselves out and capitalize on the mistakes.”
Sometimes I think Cael thinks about it too much. I don't think the strategy was wear the guy down and then take advantage late in the match. I think it was keep up the pace and outwrestle him the whole match. It's certainly what Marion did except for one big move and Ramos outwrestled Long too. He didnt shoot as much but he never does. Why shoot ten times and get one takedown? When Ramos shoots, he gets the takedown most of the time. I don't think it was the strategy for the meet, just the way these guys wrestle. More of a philosophy.
