Default An 2005 article from Ray Brinzer

While doing some online research I found this article written by Ray Brinzer in 2005. I found it fascinating (except, when will people learn that old fogies like me can't read type reversed out of dark backgrounds?). Just wait 'til I post this on the Hawkeye boards. I'd almost like to register for the Cowboy board to read their reactions.

Good article. It looks like Mocco was the second wrestler ever to compete for both Iowa and OSU.

IMO, and I don't say this lightly.....I think that Ray Brinzer is a brilliant man. Terrific wrestler for sure, but unorthidox, self-depreciating with his humour, philosophical..........and absolutely brilliant.
There is a guy that I'd love to sit down and delve into his mind over a couple of single malt scotches for sure.

Indeed....there are soo many cool "Gumby" stories, but one of my all time favorites has to be the progressive math test during one of his years at UI.
The test consisted of 10 questions from easiest to most difficult, Ray skipped the first 9 and answered the tenth and most difficult correctly. When the professor asked him why he skipped the first nine, his philosophical answer was, why waste his time if he could answer the tenth and most difficult correctly?? Classic...BTW, he did have to finish the test.

I had the chance to meet Ray at the Silver college this past year and he is quite eccentric and funny.

Heard a good one about him being bet like a pizza or something that he couldn't jump from a two-story window to the ground. I guess he did and got the pizza. It something of that nature anyways.

At the old Northern Open in Madison - Ray's first year at Iowa. Jeff McGinness drew Dennis Hall in the first round and tried to go upper body with him. At the time Hall was already the winner of the Greco Senior tournament anf Jeff was just out of high school. Hall hit the body lock and threw Jeff for a 5-point move. Jeff came back to close the gap to 1 before the match ended, but still lost. Immediately after the match - right in front of me - McGinness went up to Brinzer and they worked on upper body moves and defenses until Ray's first match was called. Ray went out and pinned his guy in less than a minute and came back and he and Jeff started working all over. Ironside was there and he almost looked like a little kid, "me too, me too." I think Ray has a gift for teaching. I just wish he were teaching Hawkeye kids and not just "Angry Fish" kids.

BTW - I still get choked up remembering that Ray had to put on his glasses to see the standing ovation that Hawkeye fans gave him after his 3rd place match his senior year. (I also remember how much we rooted for the kid from Portland State wrestling against him when he was a Cowboy).

I never knew why he transferred. Can someone fill me in? And who was the Portland State wrestler he faced?
