Default Russell dec A. Alton 4-3 Semi-final Southern Scuffle

    1) So does this signify that Andrew Alton is for real?
    2) Should he have won this match or was Russell toying with him?
    3) Did Russell kick into gear when he needed to & Alton had no answer?
    4) If there is a rematch, will Alton beat him or will Russell blow him out?
    5) Could Alton lose to him @ the B10s & still win the NCAAs?

Did Alton get screwed b/c the ref missed Russell's handlock?

Alton rode Russell for about 4 seconds & Russell couldn't do any better until the last 15 seconds where he seemed to be just hanging on. Russell had a much easier time with Thorn & Kennedy, (though one could say that Kennedy got caught & in a rematch it would be different). That would make me think that Alton would move up in the rankings & Thorn would drop.

Novachkov won the Midlands over Kennedy by injury default. I have no idea what the score was when that happened. I think Nauman had a good showing @ Midlands as well.

So do these results put Nauman & Alton in the top 5? Top 3? (They should meet btw in 3 weeks @ Rec Hall which I wil probably be blogging.)

I thought he had already proved that he was "for real" before this match.

    2) Should he have won this match or was Russell toying with him?

    Neither.

    3) Did Russell kick into gear when he needed to & Alton had no answer?

Certainly seemed like it. Once Russell decided to start going to his offense he got deep every time.

    4) If there is a rematch, will Alton beat him or will Russell blow him out?

Neither. I like Russell in another close one.

    5) Could Alton lose to him @ the B10s & still win the NCAAs?

Anything is possible, but I'd still take Russell close in their future matches.
Biggest thing this match was indicative of to me is that Russell needs to go to his offense earlier, not just against Alton but against everyone.

Yea I was certainly wondering that if his necessity level rose & suddenly his duck-under was working WHERE WAS IT EARLIER IN THE MATCH?

One thing I have noticed this year @ PSU is that if a kid loses, they go back into the room & work on that thing until that weakness becomes his strength. See Ed Ruth after losing to Letts. I think Martelotti, Molinaro & Alton go back & get better @ the thing that created the loss.

This. He had no trouble whatsoever getting in scoring position in those last 30 seconds. Why not do that the first minute of the match instead of the last?

I think the reason that Russell was able to score so easily on Alton at that point in the match is because Alton was doing some serious backing up. I honestly believe that Alton's defense would have been a lot better at that point if he had stuck to his guns and stayed offensive instead of stalling like he did, because he allowed Russell to control the ties when he had shown previously in the match that he was certainly capable of controlling ties when he wanted to.

I was mat side (filming) and my perspective is that Andrew Alton is as good a wrestler as anyone in the country. Kellen Russell just has more experience (right now) and knows how to win the close ones. Should have gone into OT from where I sat as well but I don't think that changes the outcome. Russell is so good at winning those close ones during the regular season.

Also IMHO of course, Thorn is the best wrestler in the weight when he wrestles his best. He's just not as consistent as Russell or Kennedy.

Not only is Alton as good a wrestler as anyone in the country, kid just keeps getting better. I won't say he is going to win it all, but barring injury, he will be improved come NCAAs.

Looking @ the PSU schedule I am sure we will have a chance to examine these Qs again:

How would you like to be a Freshman & have to wrestle 5 of the tip 10 guys in your next 8 matches?

Welcome to the Big 10 Andrew.
