    Default Howe notches #1

Andrew Howe won his first official college match yesterday against Oregon State 9-3 , could be momentous .

he looked good yesterday -- explosive/ quick and wore his opponent down. I think he and Rutt will be a very good one-two punch, especially if they can develop a little more variety into their offense.

I wanted so much to put him in my lineup at CK but was afraid Davis wouldn't wrestle him . That OSU kid was like 7-0 .

With Pritzlaff as his coach Howe is going to have a great opportunity to be really good really quickly this year. He's definitely a guy that is ready to go as a true freshman.

UW has a hell of a freshman class, wouldnt be suprised to see them make a run at a title in a couple years.

as i have said before, would love to see that as well but have been teased with some of their other classes that haven't amounted to much. in any other conference than Big 10 and Big V (XII) Wisconsin's class could almost guarantee a conference championship at some point but injuries, academics and weight throw wrenches in to the best laid plans sometimes...here's to rekindling a great wrestling rivalry between Minnesota and Wisconsin for the future...that would be great.

In a dual meet Wisconsin would beat Minny straight up tomorrow .141,149, 165, 174,197,and hwt . would all go to the Badgers .

I disagree with that assumption...if Wisconsin wrestles the match with the line-up they had against Oregon State on Sunday I see it differently.

I see possible bonus points for Minny at 125 (Sanders, 11-0, 8 bonus point matches) and 133 (Ness, 9-0, 8 pins) if Graff redshirts and its Kelliher in the line-up. I say Thorn (11-0, 7 pins) can get a win over Tanelli since he just beat Cody Cleveland. At BEST this is a toss-up for you. We have no answer at 149 against Ruschell if that's where he goes this year and would concede high bonus points here. (Peterson, Grygelko, Mellmer)

At 157 I will take Safratowich (11-2, 8 by bonus, career 93-39) and possible bonus points. At 165 I wouldn't assume that a red hot Howe beats an oft injured but very talented Scott Glasser who has a 47-10 record and most of those losses to Top 10 opponents. I will give it to you but certainly with an asterisk.

I think Minny has a dog in that fight at 174 with Young (18-6 last year, 11-3 this year) and see nothing from Rutt that leads me to believe he is any better than this kid. They had pretty similar success in highschool. At 184 its a toss-up but you gave it to us so I will take it with Yohn (23-1 in his redshirt) or Eidenshink (7-3) probably getting this spot for Minny. Although Bugenhagen for Sconny just took a tough Bressler into SV last week.

Herbst probably gets bonus against anyone we send out at 197 (McPhail/Bierschenk) although we have proven to be pretty stubborn at the higher end weights. We don't win but we don't give up much bonus at these weights either. At Heavy (Berhow) was not pinned last year or tech-falled and was only majored 2x's in 37 matches last year. He is a scrapper and has put some time in the room with some pretty solid heavies last year and this year to train with. He won't beat Massey but I would be surprised if this is more than a major.

In short, I see it as a very competitive dual and in no way would I put money on it either way. This year would be great to promote this match-up as both teams are not considered title contenders but they are pretty even.
