Let's not take away from Brown's physique. It was equal to Metcalf's. He looked like Schlatter did last year at 149. Kid was in shape and clearly strong enough and conditioned enough to stay in there with Metcalf. What I have seen with Metcalf is his ability to find another gear when he finds himself in a dogfight with some of these upper echelon wrestlers. Its pretty amazing. If it took a kick in the head to get him to go there after wobbling him then I guess it worked.

I agree here, I've seen him scramble out of very near takedowns. I remember his Dapper Dan match against Dragon in which he scrambled out of Dragon's last takedown in the final seconds to win the match.

His grambying into that stalemate to counter Dragon's shrug attempt in the last few seconds at the Dapper Dan was exactly one of the instances that I had in mind in referencing this.

The cartwheel against Bubba in the Finals last year was another.

Didn't he hit a pretty slick standing gramby in the first period of that Dragon match as well? Man, that was a hell of a match, and the prototypical example of Metcalf's ability jack his game up a notch when someone's really coming after him.

What does everyone think about Metcalf's wrestling intelligence? I am of the opinion that his success doesn't necessarily come from outstanding mat smarts, but from relentlessness, superb instincts and reflexes, and awesome conditioning. By no means am I saying that he is not a smart wrestler, I think he is.

I think it probably comes from the level of time he puts in on the mat.

He gets in those positions, he's comfortable in those situations, and he does what he needs to do.

Yeah, that's probably it, along with a degree of natural ability and drive that other wrestlers, even top level D1 guys, don't have. He seems to just want it more.

i agree with Jensens...i think he's just been in those types of positions before, especially in the wrestling room...i for one now recognize how uncomfortable I was with a leg in riding on top...i watch it now and still kind of panic when I watch the down get put the top guy down on his hip with a leg in...i used to try to get out of that pretty quickly when it happened rather than working in a half or using a back bow or a turk...i watch other guys who do similar things when someone has them on a single...some panic, some don't...askren and gavin come to mind as guys who almost invited a wrestler to get in on their legs...metcalf is starting to look like that as well...the only thing I can say on Metcalf and its not really proven as yet but he likes to clear that hand to his face rather than use it for a drag or just changing levels under it in this match...also, I did enjoy watching Brown arm drag Metcalf almost completely across the match as he used Metcalf's own momentum against him...

Yeah, well said. DS took advantage of the momentum and hit him with the arm drag in their match last year as well, that's the kind of stuff Metcalf seems to be vulnerable to. I don't quite think that he WANTS guys in on his legs YET (I think he'd rather be shooting), but I think he's pretty confident he's going to be able to hit the sprawl and spin just about every time somebody's in on him, very Brands like in that respect.
