By definition the term "suspension" is only temporary. So the term permanent suspension really doesnt make much sense. The U of Iowa would have been better served to state that he was suspended indefinitely.

Marion, an NCAA runner-up at 141 pounds last season, was suspended from the program in May after a drunken driving arrest. Iowa officials called it a “permanent suspension” at the time, but Marion has remained in school and has tried to get the ban lifted.

I guess it was an incorrect choice of words. Hopefully the Iowa AD holds the high bar in place & Marion jumps all the way over. He will be a better person for it & the University will maintain it's integrity.
