Default #3 Minnesota vs. Nebraska Predictions/Discussion/Results

May be closer than you'd think if the tossups go the Huskers way. 7pm at the colliseum.

    125) Sanders dec Klingsheim 3-0
Possible major cause Sanders will come out firing, but Klingsheim has that long build that gives Eric problems.

    133) Riley close dec Antczak 3-3
could call this one a tossup

    141) Thorn major Koehnlein 7-3
    could be a pin

    149) Danny Z close dec Grande 10-3

    157) Husker dec Gopher 10-6

    165) Burroughs tech Yohn 10-11
I'd like this to be closer

    174) Glasser maj Kolb 14-11

    184 Ihnen tossup KS 14-14
I think Ihnen wins at home

    197) Yohn dec Johnson 17-14

    hvy) Nelson tossup Lane 20-14
Lane favored but I gave Ihnen the other tossup

Gophers could lose this dual if they lose all the tossups. Minny could get enough big points from Glasser and Thorn to win even then.

    # 174 Kolb is a very capable young wrestler and I don't see bonus here nor at 141 -perhaps a major but a fall is doubtful.

Kolb is a tough nut and I wouldn't be surprised if this is a pretty close one. If Mr. Glass is having injury problems this could be an upset special.

    125) Zach Sanders Maj dec Klingsheim. Match will be close until 3rd period where Sanders will run up the score and get the major. MN 4-0

    133) Thane Antczak dec Riley. Thane will bounce back from the embarassing JO beatdown last weekend. MN 7-0

    141) Mike Thorn Fall Koehnlein MN 13-0 Is it too early to throw Mike Thorn into the Hodge discussion?

    149) Danny Zilverberg dec Grande MN 16-0 Danny is starting to get comfortable as evidenced by his match against Okie St. I suspect he'll open up and wrestle a strong match tonight.

    157) Husker dec Gopher (Sounds about right), unless Alec Ortiz is back, then I'd give it to Minny. MN 16-3

    165) Burroughs dec Yohn. This is the first of three matches that I'm really looking forward to. Cody Yohn has shown tremendous improvement during the last year. Burroughs has always been a couple of steps above Yohn, I'm betting Yohn has reduced that gap. MN 16-6

    174) Glasser dec Kolb. Look for the Gophers to bring a backup in here. If the meet is already won, I'd guess they'd rest Glasser. If Glasser does wrestle, I'd expect just a dec as Glasser wouldn't push too hard. MN 19-6

184 Steinhaus dec Inhen. This is the second match I really want to see. I believe that Steinhaus is the real deal and will be an AA this year. Winning this match would be a big step towards that goal. Steiny's confidence should be high after he dismantled Perry last week. Look for Steiny to shoot early and often in this match, pushing the action. MN 22-6

    197) Yohn Maj dec Johnson. Yohn is coming off a loss at home that cost the Gophers the match. I expect Sonny to come out mad and hard. Look for a street fight during the first period, with Sonny overpowering Johnson. I wouldn't be suprised if Yohn gets the fall in this one either. MN 26-6

Hwt) Tucker Lane dec Tony Nelson. This is the third match I'm looking forward to. Tucker Lane has a lot more experience then Nelson and will use it to hold Nelson at bay. But...Nelson will be a dynamic & athletic Hwt and will win this type of match by year end. But tonight, I expect this match to turn out like the Trice/Nelson match = close but Nelson can't get his offense going. MN 26-9

Even on the road, I don't see the Gophers letting this one get away, or even be close for that matter.

Do you really see him as a title contender? He was 7th last year and the field is a lot more top heavy IMO.

He was a title contender going into the NCAAs last year. Wrestled poorly to a seventh place. The winner Dake is up a weight, Thorn beat both the second and third place guys prior to the tournement, so I think that puts him right up there. I have no idea how he compares to kennedy and Russell, but he has been very dominate so far this year against average wrestlers so, we shall see. Thorn's first real test will be at the Scuffle. Then we will get a chance to see how he does agains top competition.
