Thread: Brandon Mason @ 165

    Default Brandon Mason @ 165

I've always been one of Brandon Mason's biggest cheering squads, being that he is a native Iowa star, but it should be interesting to see him at 165 this year. Believe it or not, this is the first year in his entire career that he has wrestled at his appropriate weight. He has always wrestled up a weight in his career.

With that said, he better not mess with my man, Fay!

    Yes, I know.

The Fay/Mason match will be a barn burner! Can't even remotely predict who will win, as their styles offset one another so much. However, I will admit that I will be rooting for Fay (even though I'm the only Iowan you'll meet who respects the hell out of OSU).
To be honest, the entire dual will be a great dual, for the first time in years. UNI should compete very well with OSU this year.

I watched Brandon wrestle many times in high school. He was fun to watch. Wrestling at 174 really has hurt his career and as it turns out OSU could have really used his points at 165 last year at Nationals. I have always thought that if he wrestled at 165 he would be alot better wrestler. He just needs to have a better offense from his feet. I think being at a weight that is more natural to him will help with that. I think he will have trouble with Marable, Fay, Reader, Dwyer and Lewnes. He may be able to take Dwyer and Fay but imo he is not in the same league as Lewnes, Marable and Reader. I think Reader may be the dark horse in this weight class this year. My prediction is that Brandon will AA but it will be low.

He looked pretty good last night dominating the stud recruit Alex Meade, just so tough on top

I read that over on the OSU site. While it is good that he beat up on Meade, he is still just a true freshman. He's still green and wet behind the ears. Mason is a wiley veteran and should be beating up on Meade. It will be interesting to see how he does when the conference season gets under way. I think he will do fine, but that is a killer weight class in the Big 12.

That was a match I was very interested to see. I figured Mason would win, but I didn't think he'd beat him 7-0.

Sure, I'm a homer, but I'm not sure why you think that. Fay split with Reader last year, and finished higher at the NCAA's than Reader did. Reader isn't much better than Fay, if at all, in my opinion.

Speaking of dark horses in this weight class, my money's on Fay. I called him to be a national champ when he was a freshman.

My ego demands that I'm right!

It was interesting in looking over the results at 165 in the Big 12 last year.

Marable beat everyone and didn't lose, and then Reader, Dwyer, and Dieffenbach all won some and lost some against each other.

That may wind up being the dynamic this year, or maybe Reader, Dwyer, or Mason will make that leap up to challenge Marable.

165 and 197 especially are just brutal in the Big 12 for the second year in a row.
