Thread: Any chance at making a NCAA D1 wrestling team without being a highschool state placer?

Default Any chance at making a NCAA D1 wrestling team without being a highschool state placer?

Well so heres the scenario: A guy who has wrestled for four years in high school (2 years in one high school, 2 years in another with a SIGNIFICANT improvement in the latter high school) in richmond, va . Never won district, regional or state tournaments . Placed at a lot of tournaments his senior year though . Highest end of season place is 6th in the region . Hasn't been recruited but wants to wrestle for a virginia college team . There is no club team (believe me I wish there was) . So if I join up after the NCAA tournament and stick around in the preseason, would I have any chance at being on the team even if I don't make an official roster? Or does official roster mean if you aren't on it you are cut from the team? I never reached the 100 wins mark like or had an undefeated record like a lot of other college wrestlers but I do have a winningsenior season record and an overall winningrecord.

I'll let one of the many guys on here with college experience chime in about the odds of you making/staying on the team but I say go for it. If the coach will let you walk on what do you have to lose? Worst case scenario you don't make the team, well you're already not on the team. At least then you'll know the answer to your question. Best case scenario. . who knows? Maybe you find a great workout partner and coach and you make the varsity lineup eventually, maybe you even make some noise. What do you have to lose.

my friend from high school started wrestling in sophomore year of high school and he didn't even get to start at the varsity lineup until his senior year. his best result was in districts where he placed 4th and but ended up making the team at ODU his freshman year and wrestled more than 15 matches his first two years. plagued by recurring injuries, he ended up quitting the team, but if i recall, he bested some kids who had superior experience and records from high school.

Wow. Was this recent? (like within the last 2 years). And did your friend go to a virginia high school?

Kevin Wilmot from Rhinelander never placed at state in Wisconsin...didn't even make it down state his senior year. Walked on at Wisconsin and was big 10 champ and 4th in NCAAs his senior year. Pat Christianson of Oak Creek didn't go down state in Wisconsin. Went to UW and went to NCAAs his senior and was unseeded and became NCAA Champion.

Wow . It looks like history is on my side eh? Looks like from all the stories, as long as I have the will to wrestle at the college level and am willing to work hard I can make the team .

It really comes down to you. Nothing can stop you from doing it besides yourself, nowhere in the rules does it say you need a state medal to become a D1 wrestler

True . I was thinking of the title ix thing . So because of a limited roster I was thinking that their would be wrestle-offs for the remaining spots or something . AFAIK, there is no title ix restriction for high school and my coaches never did give cuts, they would always say "we don't cut you from the team, you cut yourself." If it's the same for college then that would make me feel a little better .
