    Default Ohio College Wrestling Reports: Updated 2/18

    Week 5:
    The fourth week of the season was pretty slow. There was one event, the Northeast Duals, that hosted five or six teams, but other than that, the pickings were slim. As if wrestlers were actually humans and not just animated figurines for my entertainment, most coaches gave their teams Thanksgiving weekend off. Fine. Who wants to watch wrestling on Thanksgiving weekend anyway?

    Not all coaches showed this weakness. Last week (in an article that I finished way too late to be relevant), I mentioned that Zach Toal was to walk a formidable gauntlet. He did so with moderate success. He beat Bubby Graham (American) and #13 Brandon Hatchett (Lehigh), but was pinned by #8 Scott Winston (Rutgers) and lost 8-2 to #4 Josh Asper (Maryland). Virginia 165-pounder Jedd Moore has still not wrestled this season

    Dude, GIVE UP ENGINEERING...become a sports writer!

    Notes:
    1) Zach Thomusseit has nearly ZERO competition @ the NLO this weekend. He could end up with 3 or 4 falls & the OW;
    2) Why is Spons's uni PINK? You couldn't find another pic?
    3) I watched the Robles-Escobedo final last year & I was just surprised @ how Anthony gave Angel FITS. We will definitely get to see what Steiber has in this event especially if he has to go up against Robles in the final. (If my memory serves me well Steiber had one loss in HS & that was to DT right?) If he beats Robles that might as well make the B10s the NC @ 25;
    4) Paddock is from NY! Come on now...Would you expect me to feature DT in a PENNSYLVANIA wrestling report???
    5) I think you found your calling. Do what you love & then eventually quit the day job! Really...

    2) They wrestled their dual against Nebraska in pink singlets for breast cancer awareness. I think a pink headgear would have been plenty of pink, but they felt otherwise. Also, I don't pick the pictures that go in there; I just write the text and am thankful pictures get put in at all.
    3) Yes, Stieber's only loss in high school was to David Taylor his freshman (David's sophomore) year in the Ironman finals. If you include off-season wrestling, he had a loss to Tony Ramos as well, but those are the only to HSers he ever lost to.
    4) I'm fine writing about anyone from Ohio or wrestling in Ohio right now. I root for them all, but also, my goal with these is to provide current information of interest to Ohioans. Plenty of OSU fans are interested in how well any of the Buckeyes do.

    Thanks for the compliments!

    Week 6:
    One of my favorite things about wrestling has always been its team/individual sport duality. From a fans perspective it doesn't get much better because there is pretty much always something to celebrate. In any dual meet or tournament, there's a great chance that at least one (and almost always more than that) is going to have a great performance. Maybe the team loses the dual by an ugly score, but someone probably got an upset. The Buckeyes let the 2009 NCAA Team Title slip through their fingers with a terrible Saturday performance, but Jaggers' second title and two other finalists did a lot to mollify the bitter twinge of letdown.

    If all the wrestlers from Ohio or wrestling for an Ohio college made up one glorious team, that team fell flat on its face this weekend.

    Week 10:
    It's been a while. Christmas and New Year's Day have come and passed. Parties have been held, gifts have been exchanged, beverages have been consumed, and roast beast has been carved. Somewhat lost in all the merriment has been the most pressing issue of any winter season: wrestling. Most schools had a good chunk of time off, but this last weekend was perhaps the most important weekend of the college regular season. Two of the three toughest tournaments took place December 29th and 30th: The Southern Scuffle and the Midlands Championships.
    Most Ohio action took place at the Scuffle in Greensboro, North Carolina. Kent State was there, the Bobcats were there, and a lot of out-of-state Ohioans were there.

    Week 11:
    Ohio had representative schools at each of the premier dual tournaments held this weekend: Tom Ryan's Buckeyes went to the Cliff Keen National Duals, and Jim Andrassy's Golden Flashes competed in the Virginia Duals.

    The Buckeyes' weekend was filled with the doom and gloom that has defined their season.

    Week 12:
    My dog is blind, borderline deaf, and has a skin condition that leaves her smelling terrible all the time--even right after she's had a bath. She hasn't always been this way. There was a time when she would frolic about, prancing gracefully, snorting playfully, biting bare toes, and generally bringing joy to all around her. About five years ago, her eyes started crusting over repeatedly until the time came when they went blank. All this because of an auto-immune disease. Her other issues, I cannot explain.

    Nowadays, she spends most of her time sleeping or barking for who knows what reason. Her… aroma repels people from touching her most of the time and her motion is slow for fear of running into things. Hers is a sad life, but she has her moments. For example, my parents have a set of french doors separating the dining room from the living room. Each door has eighteen glass panels, except one of the panes is missing from the bottom row. One day, after smelling at the doors for approximately an hour and a half, she actually walked through the vacant window. Now, she walks through the makeshift doggy door every day, back and forth, seemingly for no reason but the joy of celebrating the discovery. It's probably the most exciting part of her life, and it makes me smile every time I see it.

    This Sunday, I can't say which made my heart warmer: Watching the Buckeyes beat Michigan State in Millersburg or watching Jasmine, blind and greasy, light up from walk through that hole time after time.

    Week 13:
    A month or so ago, I asked Cameron Wade why his summer freestyle success hadn't translated into beating the top guys in folkstyle. His answer? "The mental aspects are my problem. I'm the only one who beats me." Last week I mentioned that Cam had had a nice year, but would sit right beneath the top tier until he upended someone in that tier. Given the chance against Pitt's #3 Ryan Tomei, the Penn State junior did just that on Friday. The two heavyweights exchanged takedowns in the bout, but Wade's third-period escape propelled him to a 3-2 victory. Cam's takedown came late in the first period. Not only did he ride Tomei until the period ended, but also rode him for the entire second period. After Wade's third-period escape, Tomei managed a takedown of his own. However, Cam's tenacious riding won him the match.
