Default # of matches to qualify

I wrote coach Garland and asked him about the Smith from Boise situation and he responded and said
''if a wrestler wins his conference outright he automatically goes to nationals other wise he needs 13 matches .''
I would have copy/pasted this e--mail but my PC crashed and is in it's death throe's .

Don't see anyone in the Pac 10 knocking off Smith.

If he is injured and out of shape -yea -otherwise no-of course not . I just read the rule book and found nothing about this so I asked Coach Garland ,who is on the committee , so by rule -Smith needs 13 matches or a conference championship to go to NCAA's.
I was just seeking to clarify the rule of how many matches a wrestler must have to qualify . The answer is 13 unless he wins his conference .

Wait...13 unless he wins his conference, or 13 unless he places in the top whatever?

For what it's worth, I'm looking at the 2010-2011 Championships handbook, and see nothing of the sort, and I honestly don't remember this being discussed at the NWCA Convention either.

I apologize for being slow but he has to wrestle 13 matches AND win the conference or would he qualify for an at large bid with just 13 matches/would he get an automatic bid by winning the conference even if his first match is at the Pac 10s?

If he wins his conference he qualifies no matter what. A good example is Dustin Schlatter last year, who barely had any matches at 157, but would have qualified at 157 if he had finished in the top 4 at Big 10s (because they qualified four spots). Each conference qualifies at LEAST the conference champion.

Now, Schlatter got an at-large bid despite not wrestling. This was because the committee was nice enough to consider his past accomplishments.

I forwarded the e-mail to Gof so he could post it but apparently he has not yet -
He can wrestle NO matches and win his conference and go-if he does NOT win his conference he MUST have wrestled 13 matches .
I downloaded the rule book and saw nothing about this either so I e-mailed Coach Garland and this is his interpretation -verbatum -not mine .
