2008-09 Wrestling Season Outlook: 141, 149 Pounds
Corvallis, Ore. ? Senior Heinrich Barnes (Pretoria, South Africa) will make the transition to 149 pounds, while 141 pounds is still up for grabs for the 2008-09 Oregon State wrestling team.
?At 141 pounds it?s kind of up in the air. We?ve got Mike Mangrum, Ryan Harold and Garrett Drucker, who had a pretty good redshirt year,? head coach Jim Zalesky said. ?Heinrich Barnes is making the move up to 149 pounds, which we feel will help him out. He?s gotten a lot bigger, but he?s lean. And it got a lot harder for him at the end of last year to make 141 pounds.?
Redshirt freshman Garrett Drucker (Huntington Beach, Calif.) leads the way at 141 pounds, earning two state titles at Edison High School.
Junior Ryan Harold (Loomis, Calif.) is the only returning wrestler at 141 pounds with varsity experience, wrestling in three matches last season.
Freshman Mike Mangrum (Auburn, Wash.) has a shot at wrestling as a true freshman after three Washington state titles and one second place finish. Mangrum also led the U.S. to the Junior Pam Am Free Style Championship after earning gold at 66 kilograms and also earned a bronze medal in Greco-Roman.
A walk-on, freshman Dan Somers (Quincy, Wash.) will wrestle at 141 pounds.
Barnes makes the transition to 149 pounds in his final collegiate season after finishing 22-7 last season with one pin, four technical falls and eight major decisions at 141 pounds. Barnes earned the Team Impact Award last year and was named the 2007 Best of the West Most Outstanding Wrestler. He capped off his first season of NCAA Division I wrestling with a trip to Beijing for the 2008 Summer Olympics, representing his native South Africa.
Also wrestling at 149 pounds, sophomore transfer Alan Dickey (Sheridan, Ore.) will look to get in some varsity matches after a 14-19 record last year at Portland State.
Freshman Caleb Vallotton (Bella Vista, Calif.) rounds out the class, wrestling at both 141 and 149.
The wrestling team begins its 2008-09 campaign on Saturday, Nov. 15, against Simon Fraser in Lake Stevens, Wash., at Lake Stevens High School. The meet is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
