2008-09 Wrestling Season Outlook: 125, 133 Pounds
Corvallis, Ore. ? Senior Jake Gonzales (Enumclaw, Wash.) leads all wrestlers at 125 pounds, while redshirt freshman Kelly Kubec (Lake Stevens, Wash.) will be the go-to guy at 133 pounds in the Oregon State wrestling 2008-09 season.
?At 125 pounds, Jake Gonzales is back, but he?s going to probably be pushed by Jesse Kane,? head coach Jim Zalesky said. ?And at 133 pounds, right now Kelly Kubec is coming off of a redshirt year and is the frontrunner right now. There?s also Tyler Phillips and Clifton Ivanoff back there, who wrestled varsity last year.?
Last season, Gonzales posted 18-14 record and has a 35-30 career record at 125 pounds. He?s earned four pins, two technical falls and eight major decisions in his career with two of all three coming last season.
Redshirt freshman Jesse Kane (Grants Pass, Ore.) challenged Gonzales at this year?s wrestle-offs resulting in a 10-9 decision in favor of Gonzales.
At 133 pounds, junior Clifton Ivanoff (Kodiak, Alaska) is the lone wrestler to return with varsity experience after finishing 0-15 last season.
But Kubec will likely take over the starting duties after earning three Washington state titles at 130 pounds in high school. Kubec also was a Junior Nationals All-American in Freestyle and Greco-Roman and was ranked as high as No. 3 by Amateur Wrestling News at 130 pounds.
Redshirt freshman Tyler Phillips (Turner, Ore.) will also compete for varsity experience at 133 pounds after earning three Oregon state titles at three different weight classes in high school with a career record of 147-9.
The wrestling team begins its 2008-09 campaign on Saturday, Nov. 15, against Simon Fraser in Lake Stevens, Wash., at Lake Stevens High School. The meet is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
