Default Wrestling Pendulum Swings Further East, Toward Cornell

Nice write-up in the New York Times today:

"Cornell hopes to buck a daunting trend: every wrestling championship since 1989 has been won by teams from Iowa, Oklahoma or Minnesota."

1989? How about 1967 when Michigan State won. Or 1953 when Penn State won? Or 1932 when Indiana won? Those are the ONLY schools EAST of the Mississippi River to ever win a NCAA Team National Championship.

Interesting connection is that Rob Koll's Dad was the legendary Bill Koll who wrestled @ Northern Iowa, (3x NC) & then coached @ PSU after Charlie Speidel, (who lead PSU to the ONLY NCAA Championship).

Koll also coached at UNI for a 11 years. A very tough guy.

Back then UNI was a teacher's college and everyone who went there was a wrestler (seemingly)many great wrestlers and coaches came out of UNI teacher's college . Including my old coach, Doug Blubaugh.

I think back then they were called NORMAL schools...

Also I think there is a legendary stat regarding Bill Koll where no one took him down his entire career or something like that?

Tough guy? That guy was very old school. Really hard on his team...

asu in 1988 - obviously not east coast, but I don't think that was his point. (Your stat is more shocking, though) It almost seems impossible that the best high school wrestling is out east year in and year out but no school out there has won it in a generation.

I think we have all talked about this before whereas there are only 3 D1 Football schools in PA but there are something 13 (?) D1 wrestling schools. The power gets divided up & schools in the midwest still to PA & recruit.

Jake Hebert & Teague Moore were from Pittsburgh. Oliver & Kindig from Eastern PA. I remember when I was in HS ISU got Darkus & Carr both from Erie.

I had a thread on here a month or two ago about Iowa having a clinic in PA &they had a few recruits from PA this past year.

So throw all of that on the fire & then you realize why many in PA, not just @ PSU, are excited about Cael. We are all thinking that maybe we can finally utilize all this talent in-state.
