Default U of Buffalo Sets Up Fund for Injured Wrestler Dan Bishop

The University of Buffalo has announced the establishment of the Dan Bishop Fund to help the school's 125-pound wrestler who sustained a serious neck injury in the semifinals at the 2010 Mid-American Conference Championships at Central Michigan University this past weekend.

In a press statement issued by the school's wrestling program at its website, a trust fund has been set up to aid in the recovery of Dan Bishop, and to help offset the medical bills anticipated by the Bishop family. Those interested in making a donation may send it directly to:

    Danny Bishop Fund

Please make checks payable to: Norm Bishop

As an athlete in the NCAA, is he not covered by their insurance? I've never really thought about it, but an injury sustained by an athlete at an NCAA sanctioned event should be covered by them, not his personal insurance.

    Jacob,

Is it possible that Dan Bishop IS covered by an NCAA policy, and that this fundraising effort is akin to AFLAC -- money for extra expenses. Just a thought.

Yeah. Hopefully I didn't come across as questioning the use of this fund, that wasn't my intention. I was just hoping that the NCAA covered these types of expenses for their athletes.

No, you're right Schlottke. I have a couple of issues with this fund at the moment.

Checks should be made out to the Fund, not Mr. Bishop for several reasons.

    1. By asking for checks directly to Mr. Bishop this is not a legit 501(c)(3) authorized fund.

    2. Writing checks directly to the family may jeopardize the situation with the NCAA and that will ricochet back at Buffalo.

    3. The NCAA Catastrophic Injury policy has a $75,000 deductible that is the responsibility of the university, not the student athlete. Some schools by a supplementary policy to cover most of the deductible. The fund may even pay for remodeling the home to accommodate home care which is far less costly than care in a medical facility. This policy is bought by the NCAA and extended to all varsity sports at all NCAA schools.

    4. If the donation is to help fund travel expenses for the family or to pay lost wages for FMLA time off, I have no problem with that, but that is how this fund should be communicated.
