Pataky beat Escobedo last year too but if he were to beat him again I'd still consider it an upset. Zanetta beat Pataky this year, if they meet up at NCAAs and Zanetta beats him, is that an upset?

well, as gofer said, regardless of how accurate you believe the seeding is, for NCAA tournament purposes, an "upset" is when a lower seed/unseeded wrestler beats a higher seed.

When PSu lost the 85 Orange Bowl to OU & they were ranked #1, I knew it was going to happen. I didn't think that was an upset but I get yer "for the sake of argument" point...

There is no "for the sake of argument" about it.

Stardust sums it all up right here.

There is if the seedings didn't get it right therefore to accept that the seeding did get it right is accepting a premise for the sake of the argument solely. The seeding are not some fact like gravity or water is H2O, it is solely a "trailing indicator."

A trailing indicator is a measuring stick based upon experience but has limited value in predicting the future & anything based upon that trailing indicator is to any varying degree supposition & hence not a fact.

The trailing indicator is as valuable as the analysis going into devising it & how well it can demonstrably predict future events. Any study of past performance can show that NCAA seedings are not accurate but have been from time to time "fairly accurate." So putting your faith into seedings is about as equivalent to putting your faith into any "game of chance." Sometimes you are successful sometimes you are not.

So to accept a supposition AS a benchmark/fact is to have a stable datum SOLELY for the sake of the argument. Otherwise we will argue exhaustively upon the validity of said benchmark.

Is that a hunch, a guess, a hope or based upon something you think you saw?

Unless it is DS who could win the whole thing if he is right, or would it still count?
