RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina won eight matches and took the fight to NC State on Thursday night, handing the Wolfpack a 34-12 defeat in an Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling match at Reynolds Coliseum.
UNC improved to 4-7-1 overall and 2-3 in the ACC. The Wolfpack fell to 5-10 and 1-2.
The Wolfpack’s only victory in a match came when sophomore 149-pounder Bobby Ward pinned UNC’s Jon Burns. The other NC State victory was by forfeit.
North Carolina 174-pounder Thomas Ferguson got the night off to a quick start for the Tar Heels, converting a pair of takedowns off of missed shots by the Wolfpack’s Quinton Godley to take a 6-3 decision and a 3-0 lead for the Tar Heels in the team scoring.

North Carolina got those six points back when 197-pounder Dennis Drury pinned Christian McClean at 2:39 in the first period. That made it 9-6 in favor of the Tar Heels heading into the heavyweight matchup betwen the Pack’s Eloheim Palma and UNC’s Ziad Haddad, the 2009 and 2008 high school national champions, respectively. Haddad, who defeated Palma in December at the Southern Scuffle, got an early takedown and had a point for riding time in a 4-2 decision, pushing UNC’s lead in the team scoring to 12-6.

The major decision made it 16-6 in favor of UNC at the midway point of the match.
Jeremy Shaw kept the Tar Heel winning streak going by pinning Scott Norris at the 6:26 mark at 133 pounds. Shaw had a takedown and near fall late in the second period to open a 9-3 lead, then rode Norris the entire third period before getting the pin in the final minute of the match and extending UNC’s lead in the team scoring to 22-6.
Mike Rappo made it five matches in a row for UNC with an 18-8 major decision over Dale Shull at 141. Rappo had seven takedowns and a reversal in beating Shull by 10 points. That gave the Tar Heels a 26-6 lead in the team scoring with three matches left.
Bobby Ward finally stopped the bleeding for the Wolfpack. Ward got a late takedown and pinned Jon Burns at the 6:12 mark, cutting the UNC team lead to 26-12.
The Tar Heels got right back in the win column in the 157-pound match. Tenth-ranked Thomas Scotton took down the Wolfpack’s Brett Farina early in the first period and added five back points before the period was over for a 7-0 lead. He pushed his lead to 13-0 through two periods, and wound up with a technical fall at 15-0. That gave North Carolina a 31-12 lead in the team scoring.
