If I am an athlete, I think I start a union to stop all athletic competition until this bullshit is fixed. If the NCAA wants to not pay their athletes and impose such strong restrictions on them while they line their pockets, I think its high time the athletes do something about it. If the athletes don't play, the NCAA goes away.
Yeah, but if you're a D1 Basketball or Football player will you really sit out and cost yourself the chance to earn millions of dollars to help out the wrestlers? The guys that will eventually make the big $$$ don't need to worry about this stuff- it's covered up and ignored and they make an example out of the smaller sports to pretend they are doing some sort of regulation.

Well I guess if you are a D1 Basketball or Football player you are probably about 2.5% of D1 sports athletes that actually make it to the pro ranks. If they don't want to strike and the other 95% do, I would assume there wouldn't be much to watch. I meant NCAA are assholes to ALL sports and so at some point, where do you draw the line?

I agree with your idea, it'd be great.

I could almost guarantee that you would have NCAA BOD scrambling and crapping their pants.

I am not a big basketball fan but live in SERIOUS basketball country -the last coach fired at IU by the NCAA is permanently black balled from ever coaching again -He deserved it because as the NCAA investigator said -''the man is a cheater and a liar''-Sampson ended up costing IU 1 year banishment fom the NCAA tournament -2 scholarships and IU had to fft every game he coached. Plus they paid him $5 million to leave -
The NCAA could come down on JRob like a ton of bricks ,cost him his job, and cost the school scholarships and be put on probation-Good luck recruiting Blue Chips when they can't wrestle for a National title .

For deitchlers mistake? All J said was the punishment was alittle harsh. It is the University of Minnesota that is investigateing J-Rob/real estate and not the NCAA. Brian Bosworth said it best. NCAA= National communists against Athletes

A: Deitchler is not being punished for participating in the Olympics. The penalty stems from other tournaments he competed at in which he earned prize money that exceeded his expenses. Pretty basic amateurism rule.

B: Could this have been avoided with better communication between Deitchler and Minnesota? You bet. Have to wonder if J Rob's annoyance with Deitchler that he didn't enroll right away after the 2008 Olympics and J Rob's general distrust of administration may have been the cause of the communication break down that lead to this very avoidable violation...

C: The University of Minnesota investigation could very easily become an NCAA investigation pretty quickly. J Rob's finances have been intertwined with current and former wrestlers over the years (i.e., rental properties, real estate, The Wrestling Mall). So far, he has successfully walked the line to avoid major issues, but it only takes one mistake... should be interesting to see if anything comes out of this investigation.

I agree that losing a year of eligibility was harsh. But Deitchler is the one who is in the wrong. Every student athlete knows that you cannot accept money. By being in the olympics he should have known that a lot of eyes were watching him. Where were his parents/support group? There should have been a dozen people there telling him not to do it. All for a lousy four grand. The NCAA does turn a blind eye to the money sports, but if you are caught they will punish you. There has to be more punishment than simply pay back the money.
