Considering the whoop'n he gave Long, who's tough, he was due for a rise. Whether it should be to something like 9 or to 6 is a matter of opinion. He'll benefit from more seasoning before he takes on folks like TNick or Esco. I consider an early-season high ranking more of a curse than a blessing.

I'm really looking forward to the McD vs Sanders match. I think McD is slightly beyond where Sanders was last year at this time, but Sanders has a lot more experience now.

I would agree with "a rise," but he went form around #18 to #6 and he has faced only 1 quality opponent--a freshman at that. Kilgore beat Pucillo and only jumped to #5 or 6--and he had already been ranked 8th (approximately).

I probably wouldn't argue with someone saying he would finish 6th--I've been impressed. But he certainly hasn't earned that ranking.

That's a good point Gold, but he was an "unknown" when he won the job and was ranked #18 more of a precaution.

I think his convincing win over Tyler Clark in the wrestleoffs has to count for something as well. I'm not sure about #6 but the initial ranking of 18 was too low and makes the jump more drastic...

Gotta agree with Gold, although I think McD has potential to place, # 6 is a bit high after just beating a guy who was ranked right around the same as him in Long.

That may be true. The invites were already earned. To wrestle in the NCAA Championships you must wrestle in your conference tournament. Your backup would automatically qualify if 5 invites were already "sent".

Molinaro had to wait a few days after the B10 tourney before he got the NCAA WC invite. It was NOT b4.

the # of spots at a weight that qualify is determined before NCAAs. However a wrestler must still place to qualify

a guy could still pull a craig henning and 0-2 his way out
    Gold is an idiot.

Except they keep 30 or so quals for at large, so they can prevent a Henning.

Everyone seems to forget that Molinaro was barely a .500 wrestler last year -he was 19-16 after the big 10 tournament -i believe Dart dropped him because he was performing so badly .
Everyone in the Big 5 at certain weights just had to step on the mat-even to fft and they were in .
They did keep some at large or 'wild cards ' but not nearly as many as the years before .
The only reason I remember this is Ortega was 23-13 and placed 7th at 133 in the big 10 and the IU staff had hoped he would get a bid -but he didn't .
