All I can say is holee krap...dropped ball.

Larry Brown didn't want big $ from PSU, only commitment | PennLive.com

I've been seeing many reader comments rationalizing high salary demand as the reason Larry Brown was dismissed as a possible candidate for Penn State's vacant head coaching position. Well, according to the man who set up what turned out to be a brief phone conversation between Brown and PSU athletics director Tim Curley, an exorbitant salary was not going to be an issue.

Terry Resnick, the Lower Paxton Twp. estate planner and longtime friend of Brown who set up the phone call, said Saturday, "Larry told me himself, 'It's not about the money.' He said all he needed was to know that the school was committed to the basketball program."

Brown is financially secure after holding several lucrative NBA jobs and doesn't need the money. He told me Friday that Curley immediately informed him at the outset of the conversation he would not be a candidate because the university wanted someone with a more recent college coaching background. So, no talk of salary was ever broached.

Former PSU head coach Ed DeChellis earned a total compensation package approaching $700,000, lowest in the Big Ten. Possible candidates such as Doug Wojcik of Tulsa, Pat Chambers of Boston, Pat Flannery formerly of Bucknell, Rob Jeter of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Syracuse assistant Mike Hopkins or Arizona State assistant Scott Pera would all likely accept an annual salary of $1 million or less.

According to Resnick, Brown's plan, had he ever been able to delineate it, would have been to coach PSU for an indefinite period, strengthen the program and simultaneously prepare a protege to then take over. Of course, the talks never got to that point.

Who WOULD want a HOF coach for a discount anyways?

If that story about Brown is true...I guess it solidifies the position of folks that say Penn St simply doesn't want to do what it takes to make the basketball program succesful.

PSU fans will get to check out Anspach go at it with Varner (hopefully) instead of Sigman at WTT. He made 96 kilos. I've started a thread over on the FS/Greco side.

    An interesting choice.

You wouldnt think Anspach would cut down unless he felt he had a CHANCE to beat Varner.
