Re: Everything Penn State
Re: Everything Penn State
I realize it is still the 09-10 season but this past weeks' duals showed me that PSU is not far away from being a top 10 team again & that next year's team shows promise, at least on paper.
Projected line up
125 Pataky Sr
133 Sherlock Fr
141 ??
149 Molinaro Jr
157 Taylor Fr
165 Kemerer So
174 Ruth Fr
184 Crowell Jr
197 Wright So
285 Wade Jr
According to Sherlock, (2x PIAA champ looking for a 3rd this year), Cael already told him he would wrestle right away, no RS. Pataky will be the only senior on the squad.
With 41 open I wonder if Cael will RS both Alton brothers or maybe put Dylan on the mat immediatley as well & then only RS Andrew. 41 right now is the only HOLE the line up will have, not that the new guys in the line up won't take their licks but they will an improvement over the kids PSU has now on the mat.
This squad is obviously being built for a title run in 2012, however next year the team will have Wright coming off of RS & 2 RS Fr in Taylor & Ruth who had a very good open season. Plus Kemerer wil be a Sophomore, (as Oklahoma did not give him a release) & wrestled well in the open too.
PSU had the horses to beat OU yesterday just couldn't quite do it. Molinaro lost & Ortega almost pulled off the upset over James. PSU was basically 2 moves away from 3rd place.
I thought that they would get pummeled by OSU but they held their own. Obviously 33 & 41 are really disappointing. If PSU fills all those holes, (including 74 & 97) they could be a top 5 team soon.
If PSU had Wright & Ruth in the line up yesterday, 74 would NOT have been a TF & could have been a PSU victory & 97 would have been @ least 3 points for PSU. It could have been 18-16 OSU or 19-15 PSU. Benefile v Ruth & Gelogaev v Wright both would have been some great matches, at least more competitive then what we saw yesterday.
Losing Sanderson & Valimont next year will be big but Taylor has improved greatly against Sanderson, (who was ranked #2 last week before his loss to Dong) & Kemerer beat Valimont in the intersquad match last year. So if PSU falls off at the middle weights next year, it won't be by much.
The weight that will be effected most by graduation is 84, with David Erwin leaving. Erwin looked horrible @ 74 earlier this year but jumping up to 84 has turned his season around. Beating Foster this weekend may put him into the top 10 & is still a candidate to AA this year.
Replacing him will only happen if Wright wrestles 84 next year & someone else takes 97. Cael likes Steadman as he has a lot of heart but at least now he doesn't have the chops to compete with top 10 talent @ that weight class, (having been stuck by Lapotsky yesterday).
PSU wrestles Illinois back in Rec Hall on January 22nd. Thanks for reading...! Comment away at will...
