I think that is an oversimplification, and is an answer to a different question. Kind of like asking someone, "Would you like to win the lottery but it will kill your mother." There are other options out there. He has some really, really bad losses that cost himself and the team a lot. Also, I think he personally had an incredibly difficult year.

More importantly, you are saying that losses (or wins) through the year are not a result, only a process to the end. I guess it depends on how much you weight the end of the season. But, you can settle this yourself. I'll cross-post and say, ask Quentin the question. Given what he went through this year (on and off the mat), I don't think he'll vote Taylor's year better, but his own last month better.

As a major college wrestler, here would be my goals for the year, in order of priority:

    1. Be a national champ
    2. Win the team championship at NCAA's
    3. Win as many matches and dual meets as possible throughout the year

Wright achieved 1 and 2, Taylor achieved 2 and 3. For me, #1 far outweighs 2 and 3. Wrestling is an individual sport, not so much a team sport.

So, goal 1: Quentin got it, Taylor finished as close as possible without getting it.
Goal 2: Both equal - washes out
Goal 3: Quentin had a horrible season, Taylor a phenomenal season.

Winning the NCAA tourney is not a year - it is a tournament and obviously the most important one - but still not a year.

What do guys shoot for at the beginning of the year?

    Being 37-1
    OR
    Winning a NCAA title?

If you've won everything else during the year then lose in the finals at the national tournament it totally ruins your year. If you've had a very up and down season and pull out the win at nationals it makes your year.

Quentin had a better season. Nationals is what it's all about. Nothing else matters when it's all said and done.

I agree with your second sentence and none of the rest. One of the reasons I like wrestling more than any other sport is the combination of team and individual aspects. To reduce a season to one result in the championship finals seems a real disservice to many aspects of the sport.

When I wrestled, albeit not at the level of these guys, if I lost a dual match I should have won and it cost my team an important victory, I would have taken that just as hard, if not harder, than a loss in the finals of a tournament because I not only let myself down in the dual, but also my teammates. We have different perspectives. Of course you want to win everything every time, but a dual loss makes no difference in the grand scheme of things because there is no dual championship. It would be different if there was. It's not like football. Thats why, while beating Penn St in a dual was nice and made me feel good, it didint mean jack shit because we lost at nationals. I could care less, anymore that we won a dual. Dual meets are fun but they carry no weight.
