Molinaro dominating early season at 149

Although moving down to 141 pounds could make room for either Jenkins or redshirt freshman James English in the Penn State lineup, Molinaro is eager to show he's the best option at 149.

One doesn?t need to search long to find returning PIAA placewinners. Fifty-seven Class AAA wrestlers who placed in last year?s state tournament return. The number is higher in Class AA as 64 2009 placewinners return, (PSU commits in BOLD).

Returning Class AAA champions include Andrew and Dylan Alton, Derry?s James Gulibon, Franklin Regional?s Nico Megaludis, West Mifflin?s Sam Sherlock, Blue Mountain?s Josh Kindig, Central Dauphin?s Marshall Peppelman, Connellsville?s Nate Gaffney and Abington Heights? Evan Craig. North Star?s Nick Roberts, Juniata?s Arty Walsh (wrestled for Wyomissing last year), Wyomissing?s Nick Hodgkins, Schuylkill Valley?s Colin Shober, Benton?s Eric Hess and Coudersport?s Dirk Cowburn return as Class AA champions.

Central Dauphin is the favorite to capture the Class AAA dual meet and team scoring titles. Central Mountain, Blue Mountain, Easton, Cumberland Valley and Nazareth are other Class AAA contenders.

Reynolds, Juniata, Schuylkill Valley, Benton, Shady Side Academy, Burrell and Ridgway are among the best Class AA teams. Westmont Hilltop, Forest Hills, Mount Union and Huntingdon should contend for District 6 Class AA dual meet and tournament titles.

Wrestling Preview: 3 champs have sights set on Penn State
Connellsville rated best in Class AAA, Burrell tops AA 2009-10

Sam Sherlock, Nico Megaludis and Frank Martellotti have three high school wrestling achievements in common: one PIAA wrestling championship apiece, two WPIAL titles apiece and commitments to attend Penn State.

    JIM GULIBON

Derry Area Freshman (a sophomore this year)

    Record: 39-1, 39-1 (career)

Notable: Gulibon is the Class AAA WPIAL and PIAA champion. ... He was not taken down all season. ... His only loss came in his second match when he received an unsportsmanlike penalty for accidentally kneeing an opponent in the head.

    Weight class: 103
