Letter from Assistant Coach Casey Cunningham

It was nice to get a chance to watch our guys compete this weekend in a tournament versus a dual meet for the first time. Dual meets are fun and especially fun for the fans but the National Tournament is an individual tournament so it is good to replicate that anytime you can. The guys wrestled hard and are continuing to improve every time they step out there. Several of our guys did not quite get what they wanted out of the tournament in regards to results but we can fix those mistakes for when it all counts. There has been a lot of emails and talk about Quentin Wright and I am sure with Cael’s press conference a lot of those questions were answered. It just takes time to heal this type of injury but he will come back fresh and strong.

Long going to PSU is exciting but I feel bad for Frank Martelloti with the surprise success he's having as a freshman that'll be cut short for sure

Pataky is coming back in January so the talk has been that Frank might bump to 133 to Challenge Bryan. Andrew is not going back down to 125 anytime soon so it looks like we could have a wrestle off between Pearsall, Martelotti & Long for the spot. Nothing is a given...

Already looking forward to their date with Ohio State next Sunday at 2 p.m in Rec Hall, the Lions’ shutout of Lock Haven was just what they needed, Pearsall said.

“We don’t like Ohio State and they don’t like us,” Pearsall said. “So it’s going to be a hostile environment. We’ll have to go out there and set the tempo. But it’s really good to have our confidence up.”

Penn State University Official Athletic Site - Cael Sanderson Radio Show - Wrestling(Link connects you to PSU site that has a list radio stations online that air the show; show is on Wednesday @ 6:06 pm EST)

Jeff Byers asked Coach Sanderson about Andrew Long, (not by name), the OSU rivlary & the Taylor-Sponseller match.

He talked about how a kid needs to be a good fit & that it would rare that they would take transfers.

He talked about how the OSU rivalry is going to probably the biggest rivalry for PSU, (just like in Football, sorry Lehigh & Pitt.) He said that after the loss PSU got last year he was hoping to return the favor.

He talked about how Sponseller is good @ all 3 positions & that if Taylor was going to compete for a National Title that Sponseller was someone who David was going to have to beat.

He also talked about how Ruth was looking forward to his match with Heflin & he had praises for Nick Fischer stepping up a weight class & winning on a last second TD. He also mentioned that the crowd does influence the refs so he hoped to see a big crowd out on Sunday.
