UNIVERSITY PARK — A young, wounded Penn State team looking to chase down the Big Ten’s elite programs practiced Tuesday afternoon.

    Sanderson

The similarities between the wrestling and football team’s current plights end there.
The wrestling team doesn’t compete this week, and coach Cael Sanderson isn’t dwelling on the loss of senior 125-pounder Brad Pataky and junior 1 4 9 -p o u n d e r Frank Molinaro.

“Any time you have something like this it forces everyone else to step up,” Sanderson said. “That’s exactly what we expect.”

Sanderson offered few specifics on the nature of Pataky or Molinaro’s injuries. Pataky suffered a knee injury last week while Molinaro sustained a foot injury earlier this fall, according to multiple sources. Both wrestlers are rehabbing and neither attended Tuesday’s practice. The Nittany Lions held their first full-team workout Monday.Sanderson said Tuesday that Pataky’s injury isn’t career ending.

“When your are a sixth-year senior and you have already had a redshirt year, there aren’t many things that are going to keep Brad Pataky off the mat,” Sanderson said.

Sanderson didn’t reveal a timetable for Pataky’s return, although he said the program will not rush the two-time NCAA qualifier back to action.

“You don’t want to force anything,” Sanderson said. “You want to make sure he’s ready to go. We will give him plenty of time. How much time that is, we will know as we move on.”

Molinaro’s rehab is farther along than Pataky’s. But the program is also taking a cautious approach with the two-time All- American.

“Frank is doing well,” Sanderson said. “It’s one of those situations, too, where we’re not going to rush him back. We don’t want to rein-jure him. It’s a time thing. He will be back stronger than ever.”

The injuries will test Penn State’s depth. The group of 125-pounders behind Pataky include senior Eric Caschera and freshmen Cameron Kelley, Frank Martellotti and Nate Morgan. Senior Adam Lynch returns at 141 and true freshmen Dylan and Andrew Alton and sophomore James English are options at 141 and 149. Sophomore 184-pounder Quentin Wright said the injuries to Pataky and Molinaro haven’t altered the team’s mindset.

“You never know with an injury,” Wright said. “You don’t know how long a person will be out or if he will be out at all. As a team, we don’t pay attention to that. We keep going. If one person gets sick or has the flu, we have people to fill in. Our morale doesn’t really go down. It’s, ‘OK, next person go in.’

This year, the next person is a varsity newcomer. The roster includes 20 freshmen and as many as six could be in the lineup if Pataky and Molinaro aren’t ready by the Nov. 12 opener at Bloomsburg. Penn State wrestles five duals in the season’s first two weekends and open the Big Ten schedule Dec. 19 against Ohio State. Wright said the team is capable of enduring injuries.

“We have a lot more depth at the weights now than when I first got here as a freshman,” he said. “We have guys who are good enough that are going to fill and we aren’t going to miss a beat.”

    Wrestlers not focusing on hype

As Cael Sanderson addressed the Penn State wrestling team Tuesday prior to practice at the Lorenzo Wrestling Complex, an abundance of underclassmen stared back at him. Despite a roster comprised of 20 true or redshirt freshmen, the Nittany Lions enter the 2010-11 season with high expectations — both within the program and from outsiders, with a No. 6 ranking by Open Mat’s preseason rankings. Incoming freshman twins, Andrew and Dylan Alton, along with Sam Sherlock highlight Sanderson’s second recruiting class, which was ranked No. 2 by Intermat. They’ll be joining an already talented youthful lineup.

The Lions will be relying heavily on several grapplers who will don the blue and white singlet this year after watching teammates compete in dual meets last season. Redshirt freshmen David Taylor and Ed Ruth, along with sophomore Quentin Wright, enter the season ranked highly in their respective weight classes after redshirting last year. However, the young wrestlers aren’t reading much into the hype.

“You don’t wrestle rankings,” Wright said. “You have to be ready to go out and wrestle every day. The only ranking that counts is at the NCAA tournament.”

Such is the mentality of each member of the squad, who doesn’t believe anything has been proven after two days of practice. Wright is one of six Lion wrestlers who enter the season ranked in WIN Magazine’s preseason rankings. The redshirt sophomore is ranked No. 7 at the 184-pound weight class — one weight class higher than his freshman year, when he finished with a sixth-place finish and an All-American title. Wright said he’ll have to adjust to facing stronger opponents in slower-paced matches at the higher weight class, but he remains confident he can handle the competition. Meanwhile, Ruth and Taylor will be wrestling for the Lions’ starting squad for the first time.

Sanderson said he’s confident in the young grapplers’ abilities, despite having little collegiate experience to go along with those high expectations. The Lions’ coach said his wrestlers have competed their whole lives, and he expects nothing different at this level. Taylor is ranked No. 7 at 157 pounds and will be counted on to replace 2010 Big Ten champion Cyler Sanderson. The St. Paris, Ohio native went 21-2 in open tournaments last season, and is ready to step onto the Rec Hall mats and represent the Lions.

“I’ve been waiting a long time to wrestle in college,” Taylor said. “Not only that, but now I get to wrestle in front of Penn State and all of our awesome fans.”

Like Taylor, Ruth enters the season knowing coach Sanderson and the Lions may rely on him at the 174-pound weight class — where he’s ranked No. 14. As a true freshman last season, Ruth went 14-3 in open tournaments. Ruth said he’s feeling good about his first varsity season and is working hard at practice and on his own to improve. He knows it will take a lot of preparation for Penn State to end the year where it ultimately wants to be — at the top.

“Even No. 1 teams get beat every once in a while,” Ruth said. “Numbers don’t make you No. 1.”

I don't know if he thinks he is gonna start but at least have a chance for some starting time. Unless he has drastically improved I can't see him beating Andrew for the starting job, but it's all conjecture @ this point.

Interviews with Cael, Quetin & the Altons.

I am not sure which Alton is talking when but one of them states "I do not know if I am RSing yet this year." I am guessing that that was Andrew & it is still not decided if he will compete for 141 this year. The other says he is busy losing weight & getting ready for the open season.
