I'm thinking that the report itself is the death penalty. Who would send their kid to a university where the campus "god" was proven to be involved in covering up child sex scandals? I mean, who could you trust anymore when Joe Paterno turns out to be a complete and utter disgrace?

State Champion Matt McCutcheon (Kiski Area) announced Friday evening that he had committed to continue his career at Penn State.

McCutcheon won his state title at 182lbs in March as a Junior, after winning the Super32 at 195 last October when he defeated #1 Mitch Sliga and #7 Brooks Climmons. He finished as a 5th place medalist in 2011. He'll appear as one of the Top 30 recruits in the country in Flowrestling's forthcoming Class of 2013 analysis

When asked as to why he choose PSU Matt said with 3 NCAA champs around his projected college weight of 184, there was no better place he could go to become a NCAA champ himself! Welcome aboard Matt!

The Freeh Report? A report so full of Conclusions & Suppositions that it would throw out of every court in the country? That report? It's a joke. And everyone in the media basing their sensationalistic blood in water sound bite upon that report really ought to be ashamed of themselves. Freeh states that it his CONCLUSION. Any 3rd year law student knows that those CONCLUSIONS are inadmissible in court.

We have still two more perjury trials to hear yet more testimony & evidence. Testimony from witnesses Freeh didn't even interview. People are walking around thinking that they now have evidence that Paterno was an enabler & his supporters are apologists, when there is ZERO smoking gun in that report.

If there was a smoking gun I would be thinking that the DA would be dropping criminal charges in on the people involved in addition to the perjury charges but we heard ZERO such talk from the PA DAs office. Why? B/c they know that this report has ZERO weight in it.

Wait until we have the perjury cases before being able to say who did what. And besides lacking key testimony AND being a CONCLUSION, the Freeh report is full of additional holes as well.

Talking about NCAA sanctions vs PSU is a little ahead of the game. The NCAA brings charges for violations in conduct with regards to athletic competition. This is a criminal preceding that had nothing to do with performance on the field. Asking the NCAA to put sanctions upon PSU at this point is asking them to do something that they have not done before: BE an actual Law Enforcement official. Not exactly their jurisdiction.

Way before the NCAA ever gets there, Curley & Schultz will be away in handcuffs IF what the DA believes to have happened did indeed go down that way. There were no Boosters involved, no recruiting violations & the Death Penalty is for REPEAT offenses. Hard to see the NCAA justifying anything at this point. The real penalties will come in civil lawsuits: the pocketbook.

kr, I know you're passionate about this. I'm not trying to make you mad. I will say, though, that I thought and voiced the same stuff about the Dodd report that convicted Pete Rose (I know betting isn't comparable to sex crimes, but the reports are). It would have been thrown out of a court. Lawyers even said that. But baseball wasn't concerned about a court, they were concerned about the integrity of their game. I have a feeling that that is how PSU is right now. They just want it done and gone. And even worse, many years later, Rose admitted to the charges. Not saying Sandusky will ever admit to it, I'm just saying that you may be disappointed with the outcome if you are this passionate about it.

Regarding the rumors of the NCAA coming down hard on PSU for this, I agree with KR. I have real difficulty understanding how the NCAA can/would penalize the athletic department for something that really had no impact on anything related to NCAA competition. According to the NCAA...
    Core Purpose:
Our purpose is to govern competition in a fair, safe, equitable and sportsmanlike manner, and to integrate intercollegiate athletics into higher education so that the educational experience of the student-athlete is paramount.

I don't have an opinion on how hard the NCAA should come down on PSU, but I do think that PSU apologists are going to look more and more clueless as time goes on. The Freeh report ain't a joke, and it won't be shot full of holes.

    My opinion-
The Freeh report should be used as a good starting point. Either during the investigation and trials of Curley, Schultz, (and I hope Spanier) or after, we need to find out as best we can what Curley and Shultz have to say. A big drawback to the Freeh report is they were unable to interview Curley, Schultz (legally they just couldn't do it at this time), or Paterno.

It can't be used as "the final word" and the more weight should be given to the facts presented in it rather than the conclusions drawn from it.

I agree with all of that, it's not the final word and there will be further clarification. It's a starting point, as you said.

I really don't think PSU wants to draw this out. I don't think they want to fight anything for fear of what else might get uncovered. I think it's in their best interest to impose hefty sanctions now to cut off the NCAA, then do whatever the NCAA says and not fight it. The more publicity this gets, the fewer kids who will decide to go there. Not just football, but why would a wrestler want to go to a university that has become a laughing stock? Cael is a great coach and has done nothing wrong, but I don't know if even he can convince a boy's mom that her child will be safe on that campus. Don't know of many dads who would send their cheerleading daughters to a school like that. And believe this, once the hot chicks stop coming, so will the athletes.

I say, take down the damn statue that has become an issue of debate, impose hefty sanctions and take the big hit of giving back tv revenue for a couple of years. That way tv isn't rehashing all of this every Saturday and reminding the nation of the scandal. PSU is a good enough program to quickly recover, but you have to take your licks and lose your money now to make more later.
