Before I go on I would like to say two things. Joe Paterno should have done more. He has also said this. And to my knowledge, he is the ONLY one, I repeat the ONLY one, involved that has said this about himself. He should have done more.
Second, I will give you the personnel break down of the campus police system, and the surrounding area for those who do not know. There is State College and University Park. One side of College Avenue is State College, the other, University Park. Penn State is in University Park. We have three different levels of police. The Auxiliary Police, made up of the students, the Penn State Campus Police, and the State College Police.
According to their website, the Penn State Campus police have 46 armed officers, with others in more positions. The State College Police has 65 sworn officers. If these numbers were similar twelve years ago, it would seem to me that telling the Head of Campus Police would have almost as much clout as telling the Head of State College Police. However the crimes alleged occurred on the CAMPUS not in State College. Gary Schultz, who is being charged with Perjury, was the senior vice president for finance and business — which gives him oversight of university police. He was the PSU police Chief's direct senior.
Also, PSU police report to the County DA not the State College DA. The County DA at the time was Ray Gricar. He was declared legally dead in July 2011. Gricar was the Centre County district attorney from 1985 to 2005, when he disappeared. He chose not to prosecute Sandusky in 1998, after allegations of inappropriate contact with young boys surfaced. The decision helped to end a police investigation into the report.
Those are the facts so often NOT reported by the media who basically love to look for scandals to increase their ad revenue.
To say that people "mistakenly" call him a leader reveals how little you actually know about what he accomplished in State College.
And actually Flop you should be truthful. It is not that " No one cares who runs the security/police at PSU. " The truth is that YOU don't care about that for whatever reason you to justify your viewpoint & need to less the accomplishments of a very good person. NO ONE is a generality that people like to use to create a the idea that THEIR view is the accepted view on something (when it is not) & use it as a Black PR tactic as opposed to looking at the facts.
Who runs the police at PSU does matter in the argument the media tries to play "that he did not go to the police." That is a dead horse.
I can almost bet that if you were in the same position you would have failed just as miserably as you think Paterno has. Maybe you ought to look at that before throwing stones. I bet if you examine your own life you will find a few places where you could have taken a bit more responsibility for something that you didn't. We all could. Myself included.
I am sorry the TOM web site crashed & you were not able to get on. There was an another link to get on via USTREAM.
If something like that happens again contact me.

For those of you who continue to say Paterno should have done more, please preface your comments with two things:
1) Tell us specifically what he was told by Shultz (most importantly), Curley and University President Spanier.
2) Tell us specifically what more he should have done (that would have been legal), given the information he had at that time.
Of course Paterno said he wished he had done more - when the full stories started coming out almost 10 years later. Everyone feels that way, and we all wish we could go back and change things, when we find out after the fact that things went badly.
And if you can clearly answer #1 and #2 above, feel free to explain to us why YOU didn't do more.
