    UI wrestling adds another recruit
State champ Kelly commits to Hawkeyes

The Iowa wrestling program took care of all of its vital needs with the first six commitments it secured this fall.

But the Hawkeyes are known to overindulge when it comes to wrestling. They win two straight national titles, and now they're after a third. They replenish the future holes in their roster and then they stockpile more talent. They get a sixth commitment and then they go for the seventh.

The Hawkeyes added to what could be the nation's top recruiting class Wednesday night when Cedar Falls state champ Michael Kelly became the seventh wrestler to commit to Iowa.

The first six were all rated among the top 43 prospects nationally in the Class of 2010 by InterMat. Kelly isn't far behind on the list at No. 81.

The freestyle Junior National All-American selected Iowa over Northern Iowa, Iowa State, Old Dominion and the Air Force Academy.

"There's no other place like Iowa in the nation to wrestle at," Kelly said. "If you want to get better, if you want to be a national champ and be on a national championship team, it's the only place in the nation."

Kelly said there were other factors, too. He said Iowa fit his academic plans. He wants to study biology or pre-med.

He said the Hawkeyes are a good fit from a wrestling style standpoint, too.

Kelly compiled a 35-2 record as a junior on his way to the Class 3A 145-pound title. He went 36-6 and placed fourth as a sophomore.

Kelly said he expects to wrestle at 149 or 157 pounds in college. The Hawkeyes addressed those weights earlier in the fall with the addition of Waverly-Shell Rock's Jake Ballweg, New Jersey standout Anthony Baldosaro and West High's Nick Moore, all possible fits for those two weights.

"I love it," Kelly said of the depth in Iowa's room. "You can't ask for anything more. I feel like I'm going to outwork anybody at the weight. They're going to be great workout partners for me to have. We'll go back and forth, and it'll be great to have that level of competition."
