I've been bugging the UA people that I know for years to get into wrestling uniforms, etc. I guess now they finally will!

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland Department of Athletics and Under Armour, Inc. (NYSE:UA) announced Tuesday that the Baltimore-based leader in performance apparel and footwear will become the exclusive official outfitter of Maryland Athletics effective January 1, 2009.

The five-year, $17.5 million agreement gives Under Armour the right to provide uniforms, apparel and footwear to each of the Terps' 27 varsity sports, including football, men's and women's basketball, lacrosse and soccer. Under Armour has previously signed apparel partnerships with Maryland's football, men's soccer and men's lacrosse teams. The University's new department-wide outfitter agreement includes an annual Under Armour product allowance as well as a rights fee, marketing entitlements, event tickets, and retail licensing rights. The contract includes two one-year options exercisable with both parties' consent.

"The University of Maryland is a perfect match for the Under Armour brand with a rich heritage in performance and undeniable spirit to be the best," said Kevin Plank, Under Armour Chairman and CEO. "Maryland has a tremendous, loyal fan base right in our own backyard, and we believe this partnership will have an immediate positive impact for our brand and the top-level athletic program at the University."

"This new Maryland Athletics partnership with Under Armour is a source of great satisfaction and excitement," said University of Maryland Director of Athletics Deborah A. Yow. "We believe Under Armour is clearly positioned to be the industry leader in athletic apparel and footwear, across the country as well as globally."

Under Armour, the originators of performance apparel, has transitioned athletes into moisture-wicking apparel since 1996. Under Armour products are sold worldwide and worn by athletes at all levels, from youth to professional, on playing fields around the globe.

"The University is very proud of Kevin Plank and his accomplishments at Under Armour," said President C. D. Mote, Jr. "As a Maryland graduate he is an inspiration to our students and others here on multiple fronts: his ethics, his entrepreneurship, and his investment in the community are remarkable. He is an outstanding mentor for many students who aspire to his standard. "

Kevin Plank founded Under Armour after playing college football as a special teams captain for the University of Maryland football team. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Maryland and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Maryland College Park Foundation.

That's a powerful deal all around and just another snub at Nike. U Michigan is now backed by Adidas. I hope more and more thumb their nose at the Nike crowd.

Forgive a stupid question, but... does UnderArmour make/sell traditional wrestling singlets? Didn't they offer their own two-piece wrestling uniform (style of uniform widely referred to by another company's trademark, DoubleSport, much like Kleenex = tissue)?

    Just wondering,

If I understand things correctly, Cliff Keen manufactures some of UA's "compression" clothing under contract, thus the Keen apparel we see in wrestling. I serve on a Board with several folk who work for UA and have bugged them for years about entering the wrestling market.

I don’t believe they make wrestling singlets. Looks like this might give them a chance to experiment a bit using the Terps as Ginny pigs. They did the same thing with the football team when they first started making football uniforms.

I see the clause in the article that looks like wrestling could still use other companies; UA just has to have the first shot.

Here's another irony. Kevin Plank roomed with a wrestler (who shall remain anonymous!) when he was at Maryland. He asked the aforementioned wrestler for some financial help to get started, like $4000 in seed money. I guess it sounded like another t-shirt operation and, with a lack of foresight, the offer to help was declined.......

RYou: Yup, that takes Maryland basketball out of being a Nike program, not sure how many other teams in College Park used Nike. Though, by the grumblings of the basketball faithful, it may not make much of a marketing difference.

Speaking of DOUBLESPORT while they have a good product and I like the alternative option versus traditional singlets. In my opinion Double Sport is ran by a not so upstanding individual. I ordered a set of Doubles from them for my sons a YS set and a YM set. After 4 months of phone calls I finally got a package from them. They sent me 2 completely different doubles than what I ordered not only that the sizes were YXL and AS and they had been worn previously. My numerous phone calls and emails to this day are still unanswered and I have 2 used doubles that my kids won't be able to wear for some years to come. SOME COMPANY!!!!

Just to give two cents... Nike, Under Armour and other marketing companies like them use a domestic custom uniform manufacturer to build the uniforms for their sponsored colleges.
If Under Armour were to ever get into the traditional wrestling market, it would just be a private labeled Cliff Keen or any other domestic manufacturer of custom singlets. Except, you'd be paying extra for that Under Armour tag. It won't be a huge secret either with athletic directors/coaches/buyers that it's just a re-dressed Cliff Keen (or other). Same thing goes for basketball, football, baseball, etc. Under Armour has another manufacturer doing custom uniforms for them already.

    Cal:

I think it's somewhere in the middle. Like I posted earlier, I know Cliff Keen does SOME of the manufacturing of UA products. But the manufacturing is to the standards imposed by UA. More than likely though, if they are to jump into wrestling singlets, it would make sense to tweek what CK does instead of starting from scratch.

Kind of like some microbrews that are contracted out to larger breweries......

Though I doubt Plank and Co. realize the coup they have in having Kerry McCoy and Maryland serving as their entre into the wrestling market.

Oh where would we be if not for those misguided decisions.
