That's funny. It's like calling Minnesota a football powerhouse because they won a national championship about the same time Moses was coming down off the mountain. Penn St used to be a powerhouse....Whahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! | |

Actually the USED to be is applicable to LAST year only I'd say. The year before they were 3rd @ NCAAs in 2008. PSU NCAA finshes since they joined the B10 are 2, 3, 5, 4, 10, 4, 4, 16, 25, 35, 6, 12, 23, 9, 6, 3, 17. For the B10 in the 1990s PSU averaged a 4th place finish at NCAAs. In the 1st decade of the new millennium PSU has averaged a 15th place. Under John Fritz they were always quite competitive. Under Sunderland, who wrestled for Fritz, they have had some big recruiting classes that just apparently didn't reach their potential. I think it is obvious to anyone that Cael has brought a fire back to the sport in Happy Valley. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out. I think that your prediction of Caels' teams falling flat after 5 years just won't happen. His teams @ ISU finished 2, 3 & 5 I believe @ the NCAAs. And while one could argue they were Douglas' recruits, Douglas NEVER won a B12 title & Cael won 3 in a row SOMETHING NO OTHER ISU wrestling coach has ever done. Also 30 of 30 wrestlers qualified for the NCAAs. I think that those are impressive stats at any school, (outside of Iowa.) Btw Fritz was an assistant coach for my junior high team the year he beat Milkovich for the 126 title.

"Used to be" doesn't matter in college wrestling, you only get two or three years (usually) where your best wrestlers can do damage. No doubt Iowa is having it's day in the sun (just like Okie St did a few years back), but it's hard to argue that PSU is signing very high level talent. The Altons are practically unbeatable at the HS level, along with Taylor and others. This years Dapper Dan will be very interesting - I think PA will win it again next year. Both Altons, Peppelman, Kindig, and Sherlock should be on the PA team, thats five of the top 17 seniors. |
