    UI to reduce athletics budget
    Brian Morelli ? Iowa City Press-Citizen ? August 5, 2009

CEDAR FALLS -- University of Iowa will reduce its athletics budget by $550,000 in fiscal 2010.

Members of the Iowa state Board of Regents approved the budget at its board meeting here today.

The 2010 budget will decrease by $553,317 from $66.16 million in fiscal 2009 to $65.61 in fiscal 2010, which began on July 1.

The budget predicts a $120,000 drop in sports income and a $1 million decline in support from student fees, and an increase in donations and corporate sponsorship and financial aid support.

I can't imagine too big of an impact. At least I hope not.

This won't mean much. Everyone is cutting their budgets. Travel expenses may get a clipped a bit for many schools. This will mean much more for other wrestling programs with less success and more pressure to make cuts in wrestling to save money for football, basketball, and other sports.
This is only news because when you put the word "IOWA" in the title of a wrestling thread, and and then ask a provocative question, people will click and speculate. We do this in our science magazine, too. It boosts newsstand sales.

Cutting $500,000 from a $66mil budget isnt going to hurt the wrestling program. That money will have to come from somewhere but the part of it that comes from wrestling will most likely be made up from other sources. I couldnt imagine this hurting the best program of any sport in the entire country too much.

It won't have an impact. It's Iowa. They won't let their wrestling program deminish. That's their pride and glory.

AD Gary Barta addressed budget cuts a little bit in a Q & A with the Iowa City Press-Citizen last Saturday.

He says that so far the money is coming out of travel expenses and equipment purchases. That comment may have been made before he was fully aware of the extent of the cuts. The Hawks still (as far as I know) have an opening for an S & C coach. I wonder if that will be effected. I'm assuming that a big chunk of the lost revenue is because basketball attendance is way down and they are lowering BB ticket prices just to get people to show up.

Is my math right? a $55,000 cut from a $66 million budget is less than 1%. I don't see that affecting any sport very much.
