And looking at AAs is just the tip of the iceberg.

It was tougher to AA when there weren't full wrestle backs.

Of interest to you is that 1979 was the first year that awarded all american to the top 8. I had an old high school buddy of mine who wrestled for William and Mary (another loss) at the NCAAs in 1978 who would have been an all american the next year. And he lost 5-4 in OT in that final match...

I grew up 20 minutes from W&M ... and Grips' sister graduated from there.

I've always had a warm spot in my heart for W&M. They were the only school that actively recruited me when I was in high school!

The fact Montclair State is on your lists, one of two Division III schools that can boast of having a champion at the Div I tournament, still makes me cringe.

I met a guy on the L the other night who wrestled at Marquette University. It was so sad to talk to him about wrestling because he still loved the sport, still wanted to follow it, but he just felt so alienated.

The loss of the program at Marquette was one of the most egregious cuts. A fully alumni supported program at a school without the favorite whipping boy of football. Plus, if I understand correctly, Marquette is a school struggling to find students. Cutting wrestling there was inexcusable.

I consider Notre Dame on a par with Marquette. ND had/has the financial capability to develop a slate a women's sports to satisfy IX without impacting academic funding. But then, to go pick the pockets of the benefactor fully funding the program after he dies and divert those funds elsewhere, could have been investigated as criminal fraud had it not involved a university.
