Wrestling Completes Coaching Staff with Hiring of Powell, Yonushonis
Todd Beckerman remains on staff

Aug. 20, 2008

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - First-year Maryland wrestling head coach Kerry McCoy recently completed his coaching staff with the hiring of Jason Powell and James Yonushonis. Powell will join Todd Beckerman as a full-time assistant while Yonushonis will be a volunteer assistant.

Powell comes to College Park from the University of Oregon after a two-year stint as an assistant coach with the Ducks.

Prior to Oregon, Powell was a volunteer assistant at his alma mater, the University of Nebraska, where he assisted in daily workouts and recruiting.

Powell is one of the best wrestlers in Nebraska history, earning All-American status three times and the 2004 national championship in the 125-pound division.

"Jason is a great addition to the staff," McCoy said. "He has been successful at every level of wrestling and he will bring that championship mindset to our program. He will have an immediate impact on our program, with emphasis on the lightweights."

Yonushonis joins the Terps' staff after an impressive collegiate career at Penn State, where he was an All-American for the Nittany Lions in the 174-pound division, graduating in 2006.

Yonushonis spent the last season as a club coach at Penn State, working with upper weights, and is currently training for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

"I have known James for a long time and I am glad he chose to join us," McCoy said. "He has such a great work ethic. I know he will have a very positive influence on our guys. He also has tremendous potential in freestyle wrestle and I expected him to be a serious contender for the 2012 team."

"I am very excited to have these guys join our staff. It's going to be a great year," McCoy added.
