Thread: Wrestling vs. Taekwondo

    Default Wrestling vs. Taekwondo

I would just like to know cause I wrestle, and I have a friend who does taekwondo. He thinks the match would only last about 44 seconds with the wrestler being choked out.

I try to tell him that taekwondo people stand strait up leaving themselves opean for a shot, but I'm not gonna take anything away from taekwondo because of their devastating kicks and punches. If a wrestler makes a bad shot he is putting himself in a postion to be choked out. If its a good wrestler I think that the taekwondo fighter is screwed over because he gonna shoot for that leg and if he is good it will be to fast for him to get choked out.

Taekwondo fighters also don't have a takedown so if they geta dumped or double legged they don't stand a chance. They don't really know what to do.

So from hereexplain to me who would win in this fight.

Look at the UFC. How many of the top guys have wrestling backgrounds? Lots
How many do Tae Kwon Do? I don't know of any. I heard that Joe Rogan was aTae Kwon Do champ, but know if this is true.

    Heard the same thing.
    Wrestling: Great background
    Brazillian ju jitsu: Great Background
Taekwondo: Not so much, not that some techniques would not be useful/

Your friend's ideas are contrary to the MMA results.

exactly. Ten years ago this would have been a good argument, with the popularity of MMA the question has been pretty much answered.

I have a background in wrestling obviously as as well as a black belt in TKD. TKD has NO chokeouts. TKD traditionally is supposed to be feet and fists...in fact that is what TKD translates to in English.............so, if your friend sticks to traditional TKD, he's not going to choke you or nor put any locks on you and you should be able to take him down and have your way with him......unless you stand there and let him kick or punch your fool head off........and frankly, traditional wrestlers lead with their heads!
As an aside..........a good friend of mine is an advanced TKD teacher and I bet him that I could put a wrestling hold on him that would completely imobilize him and take away any chance of offense. he agreed and I put a guillotine on him and completely took both legs and arms away from him...........and the SOB bit me!! I think that I lost that bet

That's what I thought! TKD is all stand-up, and not really exciting stand-up. I prefer watching Muay Thai to TKD any day. It's much more exciting. TKD looks like a bunch of slap fighting.

Well, its' exciting when you spar with some tall lanky guythat stands there about 100 yards away from you......and then moves in quickly and tags you in the head with his foot before you can react.
I started long before protective gear was invented, so control was a must......it was full speed but light contact. Injuries caused by lack of control would occur but it was ok.....your shins and forearms would get bruised and toes got mangled from kicking into blocks. I do not like the Olympc style because it allows for no punching to the head and the use of protective gear makes for sloppy technique IMO
