Sorry, but no one should be named coach of the year in the very 1st. It's a slap at Bobby Douglas and everyting he did and everyone he brought in for the university.

There are too many other coaches out there that earned and deserved that the moniker through years of hard work, before a first year guy.

Granted ISU turned the corner this year, but the talent has been brewing for a long time.

Rev is just using the sanderson name to increase their own visibility.

One might argue that Bobby brought in the talent BUT Cael got the most out of that talent. I have seen ISU fans dissappointed by the results of NCAA's in the past when they felt they had better talent than what they showed at the tourney. You could also look at it as a nod to Bobby D. For whatever reason it seems to me that ISU (a young and talented team) seemed to really be ready to rumble when NCAA's rolled around this year. Cael learned well from Bobby D as a wrestler and looks like as a coach as well. Congrats. I think Cael deserves it. Watch out for the Sophomore slump???!!!!!

    RYou,
Interesting point, but Cael snatched up the NWCA Coach of the Year award as voted on by his fellow coaches. I wouldn't think Rev's doing this just for visibility at all.

I agree with m-n-g, Bobby was awesome for ISU, and I know he isn't completely done with the team, but in the past, it seems like ISU hasn't wrestled to its potential at NCAAs. Listening to the leaders in the room, the Paulsons and Backes, they absolutely loved Bobby and everything he had done for them, and were upset when he left. But they said Cael brought something new into the room, a new mentality, and I think that is what pushed them this year. That being said, Cael learned (nearly) everything he knows about coaching from Bobby, and there's no way ISU would have done this well without Bobby.

Check out this article, towards the bottom for the stuff about Cael and Bobby

"When the coaching change was first announced," said Trent, "it was hard to take because we had been with Coach Douglas for the past four years. He would call two to three times per week just to check on how we were doing.

"He was like a second father figure so to get that announced our senior year and to have a completely different system with a new staff was pretty shocking, but in the long run, it was definitely a good change."

"From day one," said Trent, "the coaches introduced a new mentality for ISU wrestling."

Just to set the record straight...

The votes for Rev Wrestler and Coach of the Year are legit. Each writer is asked to submit his five choices for each honor, in ranked order. I submitted mine without any discussion with any other writer or the owners. Nor was there any "pressure" to vote for any particular individual. I did not know who had won either honor until I edited the stories.

Knowing that Rev is the most well designed and one of the best managed (*based on my knowledge of websites, and their need for constant care) websites for amateur wrestling online, I have a tough time ridiculing their management. Everyone I've ever talked to from Rev has been a stand up character, who really cares about the promotion of the sport. Anything beyond that may be marketing, but anyone would take advantage of a successful situation to better position themselves in a place to promote what they love.

I'm kinda shocked that with 5 guys in the DII finals and nearly toppling DI giant OU in a dual this year that Coach James only got 1 damn vote!
