Wrestling: Cyclones grant releases to two recruits
    BY DAN McCOOL ? dmccool@dmreg.com ? May 7, 2009

David Taylor and Luke Macchiaroli, two of Iowa State?s four scholarship wrestling recruits for the 2009-10 season, have been released from their letter of intent, according to Iowa State coach Kevin Jackson.

Taylor, the nation?s No. 2 recruit at 135 pounds according to W.I.N. Magazine, is a four-time state champion from St. Paris (Ohio) Graham High School. Macchiaroli is a three-time state champion from Corona del Sol in Tempe, Ariz.

Jackson was named head coach May 1, replacing Cael Sanderson, who is head coach at Penn State.

?Taylor was coming to Iowa State strictly for Cael,? Jackson said today. ?He?s thinking about staying at home, so he asked me for a release to speak with Ohio State. Macchiaroli has been given a release and he asked to speak to Penn State.?

Jackson said he has an on-campus meeting with Kansas recruit Boaz Beard coming up. Jackson said he has talked with two-time state champion Trent Weatherman of Ballard of Huxley and is awaiting a final decision from him.
RIP Jacob Schlottke; KR1963 and rpayton

I think Taylor could go either way, but if he was going to go to ISU strictly for Cael I find it hard to see his mindset changing now that he received his release. Taylor's previous college choices (OK. State, IA. St.) show an interest in a coach that is more technique oriented than conditioning/mentality driven.

Taylor could be put off by the sudden leaving of Cael? Or it could just be a bit of a smokescreen, and he really wants to go to Penn State.

I say smoke screen. Not that tOSU is out of the question (especially after two back to back runner - up finishes), but if he followed Cael to ISU he will go to PSU. I would imagine Cael discussed this move with the Taylor's as it happened or delivered the news personally immediately after it happened.. he's a big recruit to ignore throughout the process and I doubt he was.

With his entire life spent in Ohio, he's been around Tom Ryan and the Buckeyes long enough to have made the decision last year.

I know the wrestling coach may have alot to do with his decision, but, c'mon, there must be a lot of factors in making a choice where to go (e.g., education, proximity to home, a loaded team, etc.), even if you're the best wrestler in your league.

Taylor's early years were spent in Wyoming. He met Cael then. I believe that Taylor was quoted last year that Ohio State got strong consideration from him THEN before he opted for ISU. If true, it's not like he was turned off by Ohio State. Perhaps he considers them a highly satisfactory second choice.
