AKRON, Ohio – All-American 165-pounder Michael Moreno rolled through the consolation bracket at the ASICS University Nationals en route to All-America honors and third-place Sunday.
Moreno trailed Kent State’s Ian Miller 11-3 with a minute remaining in the consolation championship at 74 KG (163.5 pounds), before pulling off an impressive four-point move leading to a pin.
In the semifinals of the consolation bracket, Moreno avenged his lone loss of the tournament to Taylor Massa of Michigan. He pinned Massa two minutes into the match.
The Urbandale, Iowa, native posted an 8-1 record with three falls, two tech falls, two decisions, and one injury default in the tournament.
True freshman John Meeks also earned All-America honors, as he took seventh-place at 63 KG (139 pounds). The former Roosevelt Roughrider went 5-2 in the tournament, beating Avery Garner of Utah Valley 8-2 in the seventh-place match.
Redshirt freshman Logan Molina went 3-0 on day one, clinching a spot in the quarterfinals at 74 KG. The Lincoln, Nebraska, native dropped his next two matches; one to three-time All-American David Taylor of Penn State, the other to All-American teammate Michael Moreno 7-5 in an elimination match.
Molina’s tournament was highlighted by a 7-6 upset over Oregon State’s RJ Pena, who took fifth-place at 157 pounds in this year’s NCAA Championships.
Redshirt freshman Tanner Weatherman went 3-1 with a pin and tech fail before injury defaulting his elimination match against All-American Matt Brown of Penn State.
In all, 14 Cyclones competed at the coveted freestyle tournament, which consistently features the nation’s top collegiate wrestlers.*
