Davis announces state-wide wrestling education initiative

MADISON, Wis. -- In conjunction with five other Wisconsin collegiate wrestling coaches, as well as members of the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation (WWF) and Wisconsin Wrestling Coaches Association (WWCA), UW head coach Barry Davis announced plans on Wednesday for a grassroots state-wide wrestling education initiative aimed at growing the sport in Wisconsin.
The initiative will help teach coaches at the high school, junior high and club levels on how to run an effective practice, how to run a drill session, as well as educating them on technique and on academics.
Davis hopes this will not only help young wrestlers be better prepared coming into college, but also help attract some of Wisconsin’s top athletic talent to the sport.
“We as a sport need to stand out among any other sport in this state,” Davis said. “If we do that our sport can do some great things, but we have to take initiative and be the ones setting the pace.
“Our goal is to make Wisconsin the best state in the country for the sport of wrestling, and I think this is a move in the right direction.”
Davis met last week with college coaches from around the state as well as Dave Black and Todd Schaff from the WWF and Dave McCarthy and Bob Empey of the WWCA to discuss strategy, which includes plans for collegiate coaches to produce training videos that will be featured on BadgerStateWrestling.com as well as for a state-wide wrestling clinic to be held this October.
“The key is everyone needs to be on track, on the same page, willing to sacrifice and work together moving forward to help the state grow as one big Badger family,” David said. “I think we can take our state to a whole new level, wrestling-wise and make Wisconsin one of the premier states in the country.”
