Gray Earns Two All-America Honors at FILA Junior Nationals
LAS VEGAS – North Dakota State freshman wrestler Matthew Gray earned All-America recognition in both the freestyle and Greco-Roman styles at the 2013 Fila Junior Nationals held in Las Vegas on April 19-20.
Wrestling in the 74-kilogram (163 pounds) weight class, Gray battled to a second-place freestyle finish. He defeated two-time Minnesota high school state champion and current Northern Iowa freshman Cooper Moore in the third round (Dec, 1-1, 4-0) before topping Minnesota state champ and Nebraska freshman Micah Barnes in the quarterfinals (Dec, 3-1, 1-2, 6-0).
In the freestyle semifinals, Gray posted a 7-0, 0-6, 5-1 decision over four-time Oregon high school state champion Zac Brunson of Illinois. Dylan Palacio defeated Gray in the finals (Dec, 0-3, 1-1, 4-2).
Gray placed seventh in the 74-kilogram division for Greco-Roman, posting a 3-2 record for the tournament.
The top eight finishers in each weight class are considered FILA Junior All-Americans.
Gray sat out the 2012-13 season as a redshirt in the Bison program. Fellow NDSU redshirts Justin Scherkenbach and Hunter Weber also wrestled at the FILA Junior Nationals. Scherkenbach (60-kg/132 pounds) posted a 3-2 record in freestyle and a 1-2 mark in Greco-Roman. Weber (55-kg/121 pounds) went 2-2 in freestyle and 0-2 in Greco-Roman.
Bison redshirt freshman Hayden Zillmer wrestled in the 84-kg senior division for Greco-Roman, going 1-2.
