Cyclones Finish Session Five Tied For 10th
DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa State finished Session V of the 2013 NCAA Wrestling Championships tied for 10th with Illinois with 41.5 points.* The Cyclones crowned three All-Americans at this year’s tournament in sophomore Michael Moreno (6th at 165), sophomore Kyven Gadson (6th at 197) and senior Matt Gibson (8th at 285). *Moreno and Gibson were unseeded heading into the tournament. Gadson was seeded sixth.
“We may have exceeded the expectations of some people, but we didn’t exceed my expectations,” Iowa State head coach Kevin Jackson said. “I would have liked to pick up more points this morning. We have a young team and have replacements for our graduation losses next season. We will have only one senior on the team next season.* Our guys have learned a lot this month.”
In his fifth-place match, Moreno had a chance late to score two and take the lead over No. 7 seed Conrad Polz (Illinois). The Urbandale, Iowa, native was unable to win the scramble and fell 7-5.
Moreno finished his sophomore campaign 31-10, leading the team in wins. His went 4-13 last season, wrestling at 157 pounds.
Gadson got behind early and was never able to close the gap on No. 10 seed Scott Schiller (Minnesota) in his fifth-place bout. Schiller scored a takedown late to win the match 6-2.
“People were talking about momentum heading into next season,” Gadson said. “I would say the tournament is about motivation for next season. We are not at all satisfied, neither is coach Jackson. But look how far we have come in a short time. I’m really looking forward to next season.”
With their All-American finishes, Moreno and Gadson made ISU wrestling history as they joined their fathers, Mike and the late Willie, as the only father-son duos to earn All-American status while wrestling for the Cyclones.
