Session 3 brackets
Photo GalleryDES MOINES, Iowa--After session three of the NCAA Wrestling Championships, Oklahoma State is in second place with 65.5 points, trailing Penn State by 12 points. The Pokes are still contenders for the team title as they sent five wrestlers to tonight's semifinals.
Still in the hunt for a national title and securing All-American status is Jordan Oliver (149), Alex Dieringer (157), Tyler Caldwell (165), Chris Perry (174) and Alan Gelogaev (HWT).
Oliver earned his fourth All-American honor this morning when he sent Nebraska's Jake Sueflohn to wrestlebacks, blowing past him with an 11-3 major decision. Oliver will take on No. 5 seed Steve Santos of Columbia in tonight's semifinals.
Continuing to make a statement in his first NCAA appearance, Dieringer defeated Boise State's Georgi Ivanov, 6-4, in the quarterfinals. His advancement will put him face-to-face with Derek St. John of Iowa in the semis. The two met up earlier this year and St. John emerged with the 8-4 victory.
With a 3-1 decision and more than four minutes of riding time over Taylor Massa in the quarterfinals, No. 4 seed Caldwell is looking to shake up the 165-pound bracket as he takes on top-seeded Kyle Dake in the semifinals. Caldwell looks to redeem his 4-1 loss to Dake from earlier in the season.
At 174 pounds, Chris Perry picked up a gutty 3-2 win in the first tiebreaker against Nick Heflin of Ohio State. The win earned him his second-consecutive All-American honor and will pit him against Robert Kokesh in the semifinals.
In his first appearance in the tourney since 2010, Gelogev was the final Cowboy to advance to the semifinals after defeating J.T. Felix from Boise State, 10-5. His win earned him the chance to avenge his two of his regular season losses as he will take on Minnesota's Tony Nelson later this evening.
Jon Morrison, at 133 pounds, fell to the No. 2 seed Tony Ramos, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. Knocking him into the wrestlebacks, the junior will face George DiCamillo of Virginia in the fourth round of consolations as he still seeks his first All-American honor.
Blake Rosholt was also pushed into the wrestlebacks after losing, 7-1, to No. 3 seed Matt Wilps. Like Morrison, Rosholt continues his search for a top-eight finish tonight as he takes on Christian Boley of Maryland.*
Three Cowboys, all making their first tournament appearances, were cut from the tournament today after each suffering tough losses in the wrestlebacks.
True freshman Eddie Klimara went 3-2 in the tournament, and was bumped out of competition when he was topped by No. 12 seed Tyler Cox of Wyoming, 11-7, in his second match of the day.
Julian Feikert and Chris Chionuma were also eliminated from competition after losing their first matches of the day, 7-2 and 6-4, respectively.
Seven Cowboys continue competition tonight at 6 p.m. for session three in Wells Fargo Arena. Fans can keep up with the action on ESPNU.
