Team Scores Brackets
DES MOINES, IOWA (March 21, 2013) – Four Rutgers wrestlers advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championships, picking up wins in the first session in Des Moines, Iowa. Led by sixth-year head coach Scott Goodale, redshirt junior 133-pounder Vinnie Dellefave (Toms River, N.J.), senior 141-pounder Trevor Melde (Hewitt, N.J.), senior 157-pounder Scott Winston (Jackson, N.J.), senior 184-pounder Dan Rinaldi (Lodi, N.J.). The second session begins at 6:30 p.m. CT tonight.
Melde picked up his 99th career win as the Scarlet Knights are currently tied for 22nd place with 4.0 points. Penn State leads the team standings (14.5), followed by Oklahoma State (13.0) and Minnesota (11.0).
Three Rutgers grapplers will continue in the wrestleback bracket after falling in the opening round.
Dellefave had the highlight win for the Scarlet Knights in session one, taking on 12th-seeded Jordan Conaway of Penn State. Each wrestler escaped once in the initial three periods, sending the match into overtime at 1-1. In the one minute sudden victory period, Dellefave countered a Conaway shot and notched a takedown with 28 seconds remaining to record the 3-1 decision. The Toms River, N.J., native avenged a 6-1 loss to Conaway on Feb. 24. He meets No. 5 Chris Dardanes of Minnesota tonight.
Melde followed that up with a 5-2 decision over Dean Pavlou of Chattanooga, who he also downed earlier in the season (Dec. 16). The 141-pouinder takes on third-seeded Michael Mangrum of Oregon State in the second round this evening. Melde is one win shy of 100 for his career.
Winston, who is participating in his fourth NCAA Championships, continued winning trend for RU, taking down Andy McCulley of Wyoming twice and coming away with a 4-2 decision. He takes on top-seeded Jason Welch of Northwestern in round two tonight.
At 184 pounds, Rinaldi, who is also making his fourth NCAA Championships appearance, tallied a dominating 6-0 decision over Cody Magrum of Ohio State, which included two takedowns. He takes on No. 3 Robert Hamlin of Lehigh in the second round. The two met earlier in the season on Jan. 18 when Hamlin picked up a close 4-2 win.
Sophomore 165-pounder Nick Visicaro (Long Branch, N.J.), senior 174-pounder Greg Zannetti (Edison, N.J.) and freshman Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) each fell in the opening round and continue in the wrestleback opening round tonight. Zannetti takes on No. 9 Nathaniel Brown of Lehigh, who he beat, 5-3, on Jan. 18. Visicaro is pitted against John Staudenmayer of UNC, who he lost to, 6-3, at the Nittany Lion Open on Dec. 2. Smith meets Kevin Innis of Boston in tonight’s session.
