Cyclones Split Opening Session At Big 12 Duals
STILLWATER, Okla. - The No. 20 Iowa State wrestling team
(10-5 overall, 2-3 Big 12) split their first two at the Big 12 Duals, defeating
Oklahoma, 38-7 before falling to No. 2 Oklahoma State (17-1 overall, 5-0 Big
12) by a score of 27-6.
No. 19 Michael Moreno is off to a tremendous start at the
Big 12 Duals, as he won both matches of the opening session, including
a 5-2 upset of Oklahoma State's No. 3 Tyler Caldwell. Caldwell, a junior,
jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Moreno with a reversal in the second period.
However, Moreno quickly turned the tables. The Urbandale, Iowa got a reversal
of his own later in the period, as well as two additional back points. Moreno
held on to win and improved his season record to 24-7.
He has now won 10 of his last 11 matches dating back to Jan. 11, a 19-15 dual win for the Cyclones at Rutgers. His only loss in that span coming at the hands of Caldwell back on Feb. 3 in Ames.*
Iowa State started the day with a 38-7 victory over the
Sooners, aided by four bonus point victories. Moreno and Boaz Beard each got
pins to punctuate the Cyclone win.
Ryak Finch ignited the Cyclones to start the dual, with a
dominating 8-0 major decision against Oklahoma 125-pounder Kyle Garcia. Finch
took control early, jumping to a 7-0 lead in the opening period and went on to
get Iowa State a 4-0 dual lead.
Moreno took the mat looking to dominate, as the Cyclones held a 10-7 lead into the bout at 165. The Iowa State 165-pounder held an 11-1 lead through
two periods against Oklahoma junior Kyle Detmer. Moreno then took Detmer to his
back and got the pin at the 5:44 mark.
Tanner Weatherman then picked up right where Moreno left off
against the Sooners' Matt Reed at 174 pounds. Weatherman jumped out to a 6-2
lead after two periods before his offense caught fire in the third. The Huxley,
Iowa went on to win by major decision, 14-5.
Kyven Gadson also picked up another victory over a top-15
ranked opponent with a 6-5 decision over Oklahoma State's No. 11 Blake Rosholt
in the Cyclones' second dual of the day. The victory was Gadson's 11th
straight win and assured him the No. 1 seed at 197 pounds heading into
tomorrow's Big 12 Championships.
The Cyclones will be back in action tonight at 7 p.m. to
take on West Virginia in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
