PHILADELPHIA - Central Michigan heavyweight Jarod Trice has advanced to the semifinals at the NCAA Wrestling Championships.
Trice, the No. 2 seed at heavyweight, defeated No. 10 seed Nathan Fernandez (Oklahoma), 3-2, in the quarterfinals Friday afternoon. Pushing the pace from the start, Trice got in on a leg early and scored a first-period takedown against Fernandez. He added an escape point off a restart after beginning the second period in the bottom position.
Trice, who has secured All-America honors and at least a top-six finish, will face No. 3 seed Ryan Flores (American) in the semifinals Friday night. Flores defeated Trice, 3-1, at the NWCA All-Star Classic earlier this season.
Trice will join Bubba Gritter as the only CMU heavyweights to be two-time All-Americans. He is the 14th different Chippewa to earn multiple All-America honors.
"Jarod's wrestled with a lot of composure in this tournament," said CMU head coach Tom Borrelli . "He's had a lot of close matches, and he's never lost his focus and has figured out how to win those matches. I know this match tonight is going to be very competitive, so he's going to just have to keep doing the same things he's been doing?stay focused and score points when he needs to."
Scotti Sentes (133 pounds) and Ben Bennett (174 pounds) both were defeated in quarterfinal matches during Friday's first session. Sentes, the No. 11 seed, was pinned by No. 3 Andrew Long (Penn State), while Bennett, the No. 6 seed, was defeated by No. 3 Mack Lewnes (Cornell), 7-3.
Sentes controlled most of the first period against Long, scoring a takedown just 10 seconds in and building more than two minutes of riding time. Off a restart with less than 30 seconds remaining, however, Long reversed Sentes to his back and scored the fall with 14 seconds left in the opening period.
In the 174-pound quarterfinal, Lewnes scored takedowns in the first and second periods and added a two-point reversal in the third period while building a 2:16 riding time advantage against Bennett.
Bennett fell to 29-6 overall with the loss; four of his six losses are to Lewnes, who improved to 38-2 and spent most of the season ranked No. 1 nationally at 174 pounds.
Both Sentes and Bennett can secure All-America honors with victories in their wrestleback matches Friday night.
Donnie Corby split a pair of wrestleback matches during Friday's first session and was eliminated from the tournament.
Riding time was the difference for Corby in his 3-2 victory over No. 10 Kurt Kinser (Indiana). Corby rode out Kinser in the second period, then took a 1-0 lead with an escape 13 seconds into the third. Kinser went in front after scoring the match's only takedown midway through the final period, but a second Corby escape with 46 seconds left tied the score. Corby's 1:27 of riding time provided the decisive point.
Later in the session, however, Corby surrendered a pair of takedowns in a 6-2 loss to Virginia's Derek Valenti.
Through three sessions, CMU is in 21st place in the 73-team field with 19.5 points.
Friday's evening session of competition, which includes the semifinals at all 10 weight classes, begins at 7 p.m. ESPNU will televise the semifinals live.
