Cole VonOhlen Wraps Up Competition at NCAA Championships
March 18, 2011
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - On Friday, Air Force sophomore Cole VonOhlen (Jackson, Minn.) saw his season come to an end in the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, being held at the Wells Fargo Center. VonOhlen split a pair of matches on the second day of competition to finish the tournament with a 2-2 mark.
VonOhlen began the day in a second-round consolation match versus Boise State's Levi Jones. Jones scored a pair of takedowns to take a 4-2 advantage after one period, but VonOhlen's second-period takedown tied the bout at 4-4. VonOhlen pulled away in the final period, earning a reversal, a pair of near falls and an extra point for riding time to grab the 12-4 major decision.
Advancing to the next round in the consolation bracket, VonOhlen found himself in a rematch versus Oregon State's Michael Mangrum. The two wrestlers split a pair of contests earlier this season, with Mangrum earning a dual win, while VonOhlen posted a tournament victory. After a scoreless opening period, Mangrum was first to get on the board, registering a reversal and a two-point near fall to take a 4-0 lead into the final period.
While VonOhlen escaped from the down position to open the third period, Mangrum scored another takedown, which would prove to be the match winner. VonOhlen was able to score a reversal and held on to earn the time advantage, but came up short in the 6-4 loss.
VonOhlen's performance this week capped off a stellar season, as the sophomore finished the year with a 44-9 overall record. His 44 wins rank first in Division I this season and are the most by an Air Force wrestler since the 2003 season when Kevin Hoy finished as the national runner-up at heavyweight.
