PHILADELPHIA, Pa. ? After Session II of the 2011 NCAA Wrestling Championships, six Badgers remain active in the tournament with four grapplers still vying for a national title. Wisconsin sits in seventh place in the team standings 20.0 points.
Penn State currently leads the race with 30.5 points followed by Cornell (29.0), Iowa (25.0), Oklahoma State (25.0), American (23.5) and Arizona State (21.0).
Redshirt sophomore Tyler Graff (133 lbs.), juniors Travis Rutt (184 lbs.) and Andrew Howe (165 lbs.) and redshirt senior Trevor Brandvold (197 lbs.) secured two victories on Thursday to continue their trip to the top of the podium on Friday.
Still in the running for a third place finish are redshirt sophomore Cole Schmitt (149 lbs.) and redshirt senior Eric Bugenhagen (Hwt.).
On a quest for his second NCAA crown, Howe had his hand raised for the second time of the day when he slated a 6-1 mark over Lehigh?s Brandon Hatchett in Session II. The junior, who is now 24-2 on the season at 165 lbs., matches up against No. 7 seed Shane Onufer in the quarterfinals tomorrow.
No. 4 seed Rutt and No. 3 seed Brandvold helped Wisconsin earn three straight victories when they followed Howe?s winning ways in Session II.
Rutt slated a 6-2 victory over Pittsburgh?s Max Thomusseit at 184 lbs. to complete his sweep of Session I and II after defeating Binghamton?s Nathan Schiedel on Thursday morning. Rutt is now 32-2 overall entering the quarterfinals, where he will battle No. 12 seed Grant Gambrall (Iowa).
Brandvold, a redshirt senior and two-time Big Ten Champion, gave Badger fans a sigh of relief when he defeated Boston University?s John Hall, 2-0. Brandvold entered the final period with a 1-0 advantage over the BU wrestler, but with riding time, Brandvold was able to seal the 2-0 victory. At 197 lbs., the Badger takes on Micah Burak (Penn) in his third match of the tournament on Friday.
Collecting his second major decision of the day, No. 4 seed Graff defeated Fred Santaite of Boston University, 14-5. En route to the bonus-point victory, the redshirt sophomore notched six takedowns, an escape and a point for riding time. Graff faces Hofstra?s Lou Ruggierello (No. 5 seed) for the second time this season in the next round. On Dec. 4 at the Cliff Keen Invitational, Graff defeated Ruggierello, 2-0.
After upsetting No. 9 seed Donald Vinson (Binghamton) in Session I, Schmitt dropped a heartbreaker to American?s No. 8 seed Ganbayar Sanjaa. Sanjaa ended the match by pinning the redshirt sophomore at 1:53. Still vying for third place, at 149 lbs., Schmitt faces Cole Dallaserra (Wyoming) in the wrestlebacks.
In arguably one of the most difficult matches of the session, Bugenhagen dropped a 3-2 tiebreaker to Missouri?s Dominque Bradley. The duo entered the second tiebreaker with two escapes apiece, but the Missouri grappler dropped Bugenhagen when he secured an escape in the second period of the second tiebreaker. The Badger heavyweight competes against Maryland?s Spencer Myers in the wrestlebacks.
Sophomore Ben Jordan?s run at his first NCAA tournament came to an end when he dropped a tough, 9-7 decision to Rider?s Rob Morrison. Jordan trailed 5-1 heading into the final period and notched two 2-point nearfalls and a takedown in the final frame. However, it was not enough as Morrison collected an escape and a point for riding time to seal the victory.
The tournament returns to action at 10 a.m. (CT) Friday and will be televised on ESPNU and will be live stream on ESPNU.com. Fans can also follow the action with the UWBadgers.com live blog and receive updates on the Wisconsin Wrestling facebook page or by following the Badgers on twitter (@Badger_Wrestle).
