Luvsandorj Earns Second Consecutive Trip to NCAA Championships
Charleston, S.C. ? For the second consecutive season, The Citadel?s Turtogtokh Luvsandorj will compete in the NCAA Championships. The full brackets for the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Philadelphia, Pa. were announced on Wednesday evening.
Last season, Luvsandorj (Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia) made the trip the NCAA Championships as a true freshman after winning the automatic league bid at 157pounds in the Southern Conference Championships. This year, the sophomore has bumped up a weight classed to 165 pounds and posted a stellar overall record of 38-8, including a 5-0 record in the SoCon.
The Bulldog grappler is matched up in the opening round against Wyoming?s Shane Onufer, who is the No. 7 national seed at 165 pounds. Onufer has an overall record of 29-2 win seven pins on the season and won the West Regional automatic bid.*
Luvandorj was named the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Year after going 8-1 in the regular season against nationally ranked competition. He earned the No. 1 overall seed at the SoCon Championships in Boone, N.C. at 165 pounds and lost a heartbreaker to Appalachian State?s Kyle Blevins in overtime in the finals, 4-3. Blevins, who also had a stellar year on the mat, earned the league?s automatic bid, but the NCAA awarded two spots to the Southern Conference at 165 pounds this year and Luvsandorj was able to win in the final qualifying spot over Chattanooga?s Dan Waddell, 5-1.
The 38 wins for the Mongolian is just one win shy of tying the all-time single-season wins mark at The Citadel, set by Ryan McClester in the 2003-2004 season.
The opening round of the 2011 NCAA Championships are set to begin on the morning of Thursday, March 17 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. For more information on Bulldog Wrestling, visit CitadelSports.com.
