Wrestling Cruises Past Gardner-Webb on Senior Night, 29-9
Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel Wrestling team concluded the regular season on Saturday with a 29-9 win over Gardner-Webb on Senior Night at McAlister Field House.
The Citadel (8-12) won seven matches and never trailed in the dual as they finish the year with a record of 3-1 at home.
Starting at 125 pounds, junior Richard Alarcon scored an early takedown of GWU's Brett Kostern. A three-point nearfall then put Alarcon up 5-0 early. Kostern battled back with a few takedowns of his own, but Alarcon held on and earned a riding time point for a 10-7 win.
Redshirt Tyler Sim was one of two Bulldogs honored before the game and he took a 6-2 advantage over Gardner-Webb's Alex Hamm after one period at 133 pounds. Sim used two more takedowns along with a riding time point to earn a 12-4 major decision and put The Citadel in front, 7-0.
GWU's Richie Spicel earned a quick takedown of sophomore Jordan Dix at 141 pounds. After a Dix escape, the two swapped escape points and Spicel finished with a riding time point to win 4-2 and give Gardner-Webb their first win of the evening.
The other senior honored was Derek Royster who jumped all over Ryan Medved at 149 pounds with a takedown, a reversal and a nearfall. An escape, another takedown and a riding time point allowed Royster to shutout Medved for a 10-0 major decision and move The Citadel ahead, 10-0.
Junior Pierre Frazile dropped a tough one late at 157 pounds as a late takedown and a riding time point gave Gardner Webb's Alex Medved the 4-1 decision. No. 6 Turtogtokh Luvsandorj picked up his 36th win of the season easily at 165 pounds with a 24-8 tech fall win over Justin Guthrie.
Filling in once again at 174 pounds, freshman Kenneth Radford was taken down twice in the opening period by Erin O'Dell of Gardner-Webb. Radford would fight back and make things interesting, but could not get close enough in the end as he fell, 7-3.
Justin Sparrow got The Citadel back on track at 184 pounds with a 4-0 blanking of Jonathan Velazquez. Sparrow's second period takedown proved to be the winner. The redshirt junior also added an escape point and a riding time point in the win.
Looking to keep his hot streak going, Kelby Smith got a win over GWU's Travis Porter, who led the team in wins at 22. Smith is now 5-1 in February and 9-4 in his last 13 matches. He used a takedown in the second and third period to salt away the win, 6-1.
Capping the evening at heavyweight, freshman Luke Johnson got the crowd to its feet as he pinned Garnder-Webb's Tyler Arrowood just before the first period ended at the 2:38 mark to make the final team score, 29-9.
